MG TD TF 1500 - Knurled Knob revisited

I took the remaining knurled knob for my luggage rack to s specialist shop here in Oslo today. He immediately told me that it was a 3/8" UNC. He stressed UNC, not UNF.
The length is 1/2".
He could also see that the threads were very worn. He had two knobs that I can use until I can get the right ones.
The image shows the knurled knob I am looking for to the left, and the one I have to use while waiting for the right one to the right.
So, does anyone, preferably in GB, know where I can get a pair of those? I wrote to Moss a long time ago, but the never responded.

Raymond Wardenaer

Well, I'm sure you will find something in the UK but if not, try Abingdon Motors at http://www.abingdonsparesllc.com/

They just part out MGs probably the best source in the US for old parts...
G M Baker

Ray,
Have you searched for fastener suppliers in GB? I would think that a place like McMaster-Carr would also exist in GB

Steve Wincze

Thank you. I have just written to them. But one should remember that this is not an MG specific part.
Raymond
Raymond Wardenaer

Ray, I realize it's a non-MG specific part; but Abingdon parts out more MGs than anyone else so if it comes in with a luggage rack, they'll sell you the bits :)

Keep in mind, a simple part like that a competent machine shop could build for you for an hour's labor... if ALL else fails!
Geoff Baker

Geoff,
ok, and I have already written to them, so it was not that I mistrusted you. And I have been thinking about the last way out, to have them made. But since the car is stored for the winter, I have several months to look for new ones in a shop.
Raymond Wardenaer

I already got an answer from the Abingdon people, and they did not have it. But they told me they could have it made for me. As I said earlier, that will have to be later on.

When we re-made the old AMCO style rack, we looked for the same. You can find near the same in stainless. Google "knurled knobs"
Due to the high cost of stainless, we went with plastic. The 6 knobs in s/s near $80.00
Bob Wrenn

I started out with googling "knurled knob", and the closest I got was a knob from McMaster-Carr. The one I found there is not exactly the same, but as long as the threading is ok, I think I will go for that.
Raymond Wardenaer

There are several types of knurled knobs listed by McMasters, the closest is type #28.
Try this:

Yes, I have been there, and now I have asked them if we could get even closer. I wonder where "the original" comes from to begin with.

Raymond Wardenaer

Hello friends,
I have been corresponding with a very helpful person at McMaster-Carr about the knurled knob. I have made a sketch (I know, a bad one, see image). I also sent a couple of images of the luggage rack. But again, since the car is far away from where I live, I have a wish (!). Could anyone out there get a close-up of that part of the AMCO rack, so it is easier for that person to see how the joint work?
Raymond
PS. See next image for my photo.

Raymond Wardenaer

Here is the only photo I had.

Raymond Try <guenter.kallies@t-online.de> he has or has access to machinery. Bet he could make you up one or two in nothing flat. He would need a sketch with all the dimensions and details of the knurling and whether it is made of brass or steel.
Cheers and good luck,
Bob

I could - I stress could - send him the one I have left, but for some reason I am clinging to it :-)

Raymond

We all know of the existence of this part.I guess AMCO no longer exists? But one should think someone had a wrecked luggage rack that is not in use any more.
Only one knurled knob...
Raymond Wardenaer

Raymond, I have a couple of these knobs which I will send to you....I didn't like them because you cannot grip them enough to make them tight... I replaced all of my amco knobs with generic plastic ones that have wings that give much more torque...they are normal usa 3/8 course thread and were available at a local hardware store...send me your postal address

Wow! That will be great. But you are right in what you are saying, that is probably why i lost one.
But I will fasten them so hard that that will not happen again. As I have explained earlier, I shall keep the rack up all the time, also when carrying luggage. I shall just weld a rod across at the bottom, like those on the racks to avoid the luggage from moving at stops.
But, maybe for others, too, could you tell us the make of those you now use?

Raymond Wardenaer

Raympnd.
I put rubber washers under mine to keep them tight.

Don Harmer

Raymond,
I guess you could leave the rack up all of the time,,, but if you're going to be away for a few weeks with your wife/girl friend, and you have formal events to attend along the way, ya just gotta put it down!!!

Steve Wincze

Steve,
I have no girlfriend or wife, and I would never take the MG and travel far for a formal event!
I just sold my FIAT Barchetta, a roadster with a rather small luggage compartment. I went on a months trip with this car (to Scotland) and managed to keep all the luggage in the compartment. Two long and narrow sports bags did the bit.
Just for your information, I am 70 years of age!
Raymond Wardenaer

Raymond,
If your only 70 it's time to get a girl friend.
WWarm regards,
Dick Thomas

Ray,
I'm 63,and my wife is close to that... We tour with 5 other MG couples, one had her 70th this past summer, and another couple stopped counting at 70 a few years ago,,,,

Steve Wincze

I did not say I will not do a lot of touring with my MG, I just bought it! I only said I am not married (any more) and I am not looking for a girl friend!
Raymond Wardenaer

Hi Ray,
I do not understand your problem, I found in the Archive your tread concerning the same knurled knob. It was in September 2009 when you get the advice from Tobias Steven that there is a New York company, which offer knurled knobs for less than $8.
Tobi give you a link for two examples and I'm wondering that you not have checked this source.

http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/knurled-knobs/machine-tool-accessories/machining/ecatalog/N-9n2?op=search

Even if the thread is not correct for your rack it will be much easier to drill it out and cut a new one in it.

Please think about that, the risk is extremly low. Maximum $8 plus shipping.

Cheers,
Guenter

Hahaha... at the moment, in my living room, on my coffee table is an mg td head...resting on the studs is the manifold and two 1 1/2" carbs .... both clean and polished and freshly painted...
Ok...guess if I have a wife and or girlfriend?????

gblawson(gordon)

Wow Gordon!
Do you wear sunglasses if you inspect the head? The red color is strange, isn’t it?
See the head for my baby, not yet painted but machined and new valves and hardened seats installed.
Cheers and good luck
Guenter

The engine was bright red rather then MG red when I bought the car...just saving having to repaint the rest of the engine...besides, I like the brighter red.
This summer I'm going to run without the side panels to the bonnet/hood...may as well show off the bright bits while they are still bright!
gblawson(gordon)

Raymond, the like that Guenter posted shows knobs that look identical to the original Amco ones...
Here is knob like the ones Iam using: http://www1.mscdirect.com/CGI/NNSRIT?PMPXNO=2144958&PMT4NO=75161219

If you don't like these, go to www.msdirect.com ans search for "knobs", you will find lots to choose from..if you wanyt my originals (which might need chrome) send me your postal address

Guenter, now you have an MG you can't afford a girlfriend anyway. And of course, there is the engine head on the coffee table issue that others have already covered ...

Geoff Baker

Guenter,
Yes, i have seen many links to companies that have knurled knobs. And of course I checked that source. The other day I corresponded with one company. I even called them in the US. In the end they advised me to have them made in Norway.
I didn't think about buying one and have it drilled and cut. I thought it would be possible to get a correct one. And, as you can read above, I will be getting one from Terry Sanders.
Raymond Wardenaer

Guenter has a girlfriend, it's called an MG. :-)
