MG TD TF 1500 - LED Lamp Info

See http://www.superbrightleds.com/ for some very good information about LED substitute bulbs. Their tech page is well worth reading.

On neither site could I tell if any of the bulbs are Pos. Ground because the neg ground ones will not work in the MG as it came from the factory. Any ideas who makes Ps. ground bulbs???

Positive ground sources are going to be few and far between. Sorry about that.

Gentlemen,
I recently came across a website for Stuebakers that sells both positive and negative ground led bulbs. They advertise them for 6 volt auto applications, but I'd be willing to bet that they have access to 12 volt LED's as well, since Studebaker eventually went to 12 volt systems part way through the 50's. This is the link to the website: http://www.highspeedmotors.com/Webled.html

You are right about that, but my car has a lot of diodes and electronics running on a phantom negative ground while the car has positive ground, so I am not going to switch. Too much work.

I make and sell LED insterts for the TC D lamps and get this question all the time for TD/TF but I have yet to find a positive ground 12 volt unit....perhaps the Studebacker guy has the answer....we shall see!

I just emailed the guy at the Studdy site and will let everyone know what he says. Lots of us would use the LED if we could get em...

I got an answer from the Stude site....they don't have postive ground LEDs yet..needs more request..but thanks to Larry Shoer here is a site in UK that has them: http://www.norbsa02.freeuk.com/goffyleds.htm

A friend had a company provide him with positive ground LED...not sure if he made the lights or they did... here is the info:
I had a company in Dayton convert the
lights to positive. The bulb is a FET Catz Hotsports LED Stop/Taillight
bulb.

THE BULB PART NUMBER I ORDERED FOR THE POSITIVE GROUND WAS HS1157R.

Gordon, tried to call the number you gave and it is no longer in use. How long ago did you order the bulbs .
TRM Maine

He got them about 2 years ago....

I have an article which appeared in a British electronics magazine about 2 years ago detailing how to make your own LED unit to suit most types of fitting. At some point in the future I intend to make a set of brake and indicator units for my TD.

It is quite interesting to note the safety factor using these units as brake lights. The standard filament lamps take between 120ms and 250ms to 'light up' when you hit the brakes. For example at 70mph this equates to distance travelled of 6.8 yards. LEDS light up almost instantaneously and could reduce incidence of a rear end shunt!!

If any one is interested in having a copy let me know but bear in mind the file size will be quite large as it is a 10 page article.

Cheers,

Bud et al,

I have just finished reading a good entry in "Shop Manual" of the February edition of Street Rod (one of my favourite magazines), on the 1157 LED version of such a common bulb, and its application in a flasher circuit (page 234 for those interested).

I would have scanned it but its too long to insert here.

But from all of this, it has become clear that above all, our little cars will have to be converted to negative ground, if we are to take advantage of this valuable, emerging technology.

I am beginning to see the many advantages, and perhaps this will be a (next) winter project.

My friend's TC has LED's for running lights, third stop light (hidden behind the spare) and is still Pos ground! If one company can make them 'pos', would think any would?
Am going to change the Wols to neg ground, but somehow it just seems wrong to do the TD? Call me crazy!

gordon -- if the light has only an on/off function, and if it has two wires, you can very likely connect it up for either ground. You may have to avoid metal to metal contact between the light and the car. LEDs are indeed polarity sensitive, but they have no idea where ground is, just + and -.
