Looking good Dave. What type of supercharger are you going to run?

Butch:

It's a Judson rebuilt by George Folchi with a 1 1/2" SU and a one-off 4-into-2-into-1 ceramic-coated header. I hope we'll be back up and running by the end of the first week in July.

While we've got everything down, we're going to replace this starter [I think this is actually a TC starter, anyway] with a higher torque starter from a Spridget.

I noticed how you routed the radiator support rod to the heavy frame across the radiator and headlight brackets. That's the more logical location for support.

I did the same thing with our Marshall blower.

Dave, I've got to be the one to ask the stupid question but I'm curious. Is that an alternator hanging on there or what the heck is it???

Ed

Ed - yes, it's a Nippondenso 60 amp alternator. We searched the shelves at NAPA to find one that would satisfactorily fit the space, and this one seemed to be the best fit.

So far, the newly charged Oriental electrons have lined up fairly well with the existing British electrons, and we have not yet seen a tear in the space-time continuum. In the short time we have been up and running, the ammeter has always been nicely on the + side of the gauge, and so far all the smoke has stayed inside the wires.

Here's hoping we continue in that fashion...

Here's the way the alternator looked when things were a little more hopeful. Give us ten days - we'll get back there.

Dave,

I don't see any rev-counter take-off!!

Gord:

The tach has the original TD face but actually holds Smiths/MGB electric internals. The sweep is almost the same, and it seemed to be the best way to keep the original face but get an electric readout.

There is apparently a company that builds an alternator inside the original Lucas generator shell complete with original geared tach drive, but I liked the idea of being able to walk into NAPA and buy an alternator.

A fellow in Kelowna did the rebuilding, but I know that Palo Alto and Nisonger will also do the job.

Dave
Dave Jorgensen

Yeah That company is in Germany and the price is in the $400 range. Gerry (Jerry?) Felker in CA does the alternator with the tach. drive conversion, or used to.

Dave,
I'm glad that some one finally found a use for the bolt holes on the side of the valve cover !!!!!!

Mixing Oriental electrons with British electrons is like mixing matter with anti-matter. Be very careful or you will damage your flux capacitor. In therory with the power of the blower you can generate enough Gigawatts to raise the Prince of Darkness from the world of the unenLIGHTened.

Looking good Dave. Blowers rock.

Okay, now that we've opened up a can of worms, why use an alternator vs. a "dynamo"? (No, I really don't have a clue.) Layman's terms please!
efh Haskell

Ed: There are several reasons I decided to go with an alternator rather than stick with a generator.

1] An alternator produces maximum amperage from just off idle, so by the time you're generally turning at 1500 rpm, you've got 60 amps at your disposal. This keeps battery charged under load because;

2] I'm running a lot of electrics: heater motor, 200 watts worth of driving lights, electric rad fan, seat heaters, 200 watts worth of high beams, hi torque starter, and;

3] a 12 volt power outlet for cellphone/iPod connection, electric defroster/heater fan, and all that is negative ground.

For me, the TD will be a real car from April to November, and I've got the hope and illusion that with an electronic ignition, a high capacity coil, and a big starter, I can get the little monster to start first time/every time, get me through the longer spring and fall evenings with maximum illumination and maximum warmth.

And all this requires a really healthy dose of electrons.

Dave,
And don't forget the compressor for the air horns to notify the slower cars that you are commin' through!!
