MG TD TF 1500 - Looking for JRN JIM, Michigan, USA

Jim,
I would like to learn more about your front disc brakes.
I have an early TD with the Moss conversion wire wheels that came with drums and adapter for the follower.
You can contact me here or at my email.
Thanks,
Mort

Mort 50 TD

Hey Mort!

I grabbed a junk MGB to get the 3.92 rear end for better cruising (have supercharger), the wire wheel adapters, the disc brakes, sway bar and a few other goodies. I looked at the Moss wire wheel package. and can't say whether or not they will bolt to the MGB discs but the B adapters are readily available. Wife's TD came with old chrome wires so it has to stay chrome wires wheels. The oldies were the Dayton wheels and I didn't care for the adapters, thus the switch to the splined adapters. I thought I bought Dunlop wire wheels, but on installing tires, discovered the steel rims (rims, not wheel assemblies) are from Dayton; they are frequently breaking the stainless spokes!!! I more or less had to go with the discs in our case and the car is so modified, it doesn't matter on originality. They are there for looks and conversation.

Why do you want to switch? Looks? The TD twin leading shoe brakes are a very good design and balanced with the rear brakes for safe stopping. In my opinion, the disc brake is not any better, and if it were significantly more powerful, the car would tend to spin out, especially without the compensating valve. Why have all cars gone to vacuum boosters? Because disc are less powerful. The leading shoe of drum brakes inherently increases braking force. Another advantage of the older drum brakes is they don't drag. There is a parasitic drag with most disc brakes and these do drag. I've spent the last couple years developing a patent for a no/low drag disc brake system, so I've done a bit of research on the subject.

The single brake circuit can work, but I spent a great deal of time modifying a Chevy Vega master cylinder
for a dual circuit configuration along with adding a compensating valve. Much of the change was to seal the fluid reservoir so we can refill brake fluid from a 1915 DeLaval clear glass oiler on the firewall. The B's didn't use the compensating valve at first but added them eventually.

Did this help or am I raining on your parade?
