MG TD TF 1500 - lucas fog lamp sft462

I recently purchased an original Lucas SFT 462 fog lamp for my early TD and while the case, reflector and glass are all in great shape, I appear to be missing some internal parts. There is a "bakelight" rim with a contact for grounding a lamp but there is no contact (or for that matter it appears that there never was a contact) for the center of the bulb. This rim fits over the raised portion of the reflector and appears to be original but it does not hold the bulb in the lens and as stated above has no central contact.

Does anyone have an idea of what I am missing or even better yet, a picture of an original unit showing the internal parts. I guess the next question would be.....does anyone have these parts excess to their needs???

Thanks for any help.

Hi All

No comments on this thread so I am guesing that most people are using the Lucas SFT 576 lamps. I did go out to the shop and took the lamp apart again and noticed that there were two small holes in the ring. I compared to a 576 lamp and feel that that is where the centre contact must go so using some bits and pieces from an MGA and also some spring steel I have recreated the center contact. This will work but doesn't look stock but then who is going to take it apart to check it out???

I have read that the sft 576 are too new for the TD and the 462 is OK for the TC and early TD. Anybody have any comments on this.

Thanks
Brian

PS - the TD will be 60 in September

Check the archives for: "Lucas SLR/SFT 576 driving lamps"

I have Lucas SLR 576 driving lamps mounted on my TD with 1952 lamp manufacture date. There are reports these lamps were manufactured as early as 1951. Note that there are subtle differences in these lamps depending on when they were manufactured. A picture of the early version lamp is attached.

I have a pair of the sft 576 mounted on the TD now (actually for the last 5 years) but wanted to use the single SFT462 as the car was manufactured in sept 1950 but I do like the looks of the SFT 576 lamps. They may just go to my 1954 TF.

Brian,

Sorry, didn't see this question here until today. Here's what the inside of an SFT 462 should look like.

Mine is close but not exactly the same. The reflector bowl (backside) has a raised portion that accepts a bakelight rim rather than the fitting that you show. I don't know if that is a function of when it was manufactured or if it has been modified. I have now rigged up the bakelight to accept both the power and ground wires and it seems to work so guess I should just be happy with it the way it is.

Brian,

I have two of these and both are identical on the inside. I tried searching for repair parts and couldn't find any but did see that http://www.gregorysautoparts.co.uk/catalogue.php?t=1&c=39 has two restored units. If you decide to try to go original you may be able to contact them for parts.

This Model is a pretty scarce item. I have the Lucas Master catalogue, 1945 - 1960. It you can give me an actual part number, 5 digits maybe plus a letter, I can give you spare parts numbers - not that it will do you much good! I may be able to come up with a picture, though I don't know how I'll get it out of the book.

There is a bulb holder on ebay now that might be what you need.

Couldn't find anything that looks like what I have in the lamp now. The silvered reflector is brass but a slightly different configuration than the one above and the "contact" plate seems to be made to fit it so I will just go with it. I did get the lamp from England and who knows what has been done to it in the past. It does take a standard Lucas fog or driving lamp so should work just as well as the SFT 576's that I am taking off. They will then go onto the TF once it is up and running.

The lamp is marked "Lucas SFT 462", the glass is "Lucas 462 foglamp" and there is a small number stamped on the bottom 654
