MG TD TF 1500 - MD TD Blueprints

Hello all

I am currently a student studying a BA Hons in model making for design and media and I'm in my final year. for my final major project I intend to create a highly detailed model of an mg td, planning on making it roughly 2 meters in length.

My problem at the moment is i have no accurate plans or drawings of body panels and wings (and all the other obvious visual bits of the car.) and no measurements to speak of.

If anyone has any plans, drawings or pictures which may help me please could you let me know.

Thanks very much

the chassis is on the workshop manual
Jose Vicente Vargas

José is spot on.

Chassis dims can be found in Section S of the WSM. But they are very small and would need to be scanned and scaled-up.

While chassis dims will help, they don't show any body panels and the only means I can think of, is to get a good, clear side profile photograph - the larger, the better, scan it and and scale it using AutoCad Trace or a Shadowgraph.

Wish I could be of more help - good luck!

Art: You should get a copy of the Moss MGT Parts & Accessories book, in it you will find all kinds of drawings for body parts, etc. Look under TD Body Panels, no measurements just drawings. You can order a book on line from Moss Motors at: www.mossmotors.com
Hope this is of some help.

Have seen large exploded HD prints of the TF and TD 'see through' illustrations somewhere out there?

Not precisely what you need, but I suppose it's possible that these folks might help you with your project.

I think I have a "cut-away" view of a TF somewhere.
Don't know how much good that would do as you are doing a "TD". I would be happy to look for it if you think it would help.
Wasn't there a similar drawing of the TD done?
Best if luck with the project.

All this brings to mind ... what ever happened to all tbe original MG drawings? I simply refuse to believe they ended up in the trash bin.

Many of you know the Rev. Dr. Dick Knudson. Dick lived for 2 years in Abingdon while he prepared his doctoral thesis, of course prior to the demise of MG. His inputs might be interesting as he did manage to rescue large quanitities of material otherwise was headed for the trash bins, and which he continues to use in his writings on MGs.

I have asked similar questions of the original MG machinery. Some of you may recall that the MGB machinery was found behind a warehouse in Cowley rusting in the rain. Some enterprising soul rescued those critical molds, patterns, etc and from that arose the Heritage company that continues to produce brand new MGBs to this day.

Where are those drawings?

I was always under the impression that when BMC was formed, all the MG stuff from the 20s to the 50s was trashed...in a dumpster. One chap jumped in and rescued a box or two and that was the MM records...everything else was taken to the dump!
Correct me if I'm wrong?
gblawson(gordon)

I contacted Dick Knudson and he surmises that all drawings may still be at Gaydon (Heritage Centre).

... might be worth asking .

Ant,

Try this link:

You can register for free, and get some interesting drawings with a front, rear and side view of the TD.

Ant...you have mail

Ant,

I received from a good friend a model kit (wood) with detailed shaping instructions views. I created a PDF of the instructions and emailed the 11x17 inch document to you.

Perhaps somebody who has replaced the wood has some drawings/measurements, etc?

ant,
have you considered acquiring a smaller plastic model such as one made by gowland&gowland or lindberg or revell (about 5 inches long) or one by k&r (white metal but can be costly) one by hubley #485 (about 8 inches long - NOT the smaller #432 model as it does not quite have the correct profile/shape) or even one by doepke (about 15 inches long - talk about costly!) and scaling up ??

check out chris cooper's site 'the original mg td.' at http://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgtd/Pictures/Models/Thumbnails/mgtd_gallery_models.htm you can find quite a few models. see #'s 1, 4, 23, 39, 65

you could use dial calipers to take measurements off your 'prototype' and scale up accordingly. small model prototypes are often developed first because of the reduced expense, often in clay or plastic then scaled up.

your instructor/professor may go for this route for you given the absence of any 'correct' plans. might be different from all your other peers, as well.

good luck, and keep us posted on your progress. i'd love to see your finished product, so repost a pic here!!
Francis Precht

Any value to this forum/MG enthusiasts to gather the PDFs, drawings, etc being exchanged (those without copyright of course) some place (B Krueger ttalk, mgcars.org, ???) for future use?

thanks Gordon and Dave both those PDFs are brilliant!

Yes Francis I have considered doing that but my problem there is getting hold of the plastic kits, i cant find a company that still sells the MG TD... I am considering getting the white metal MG model from K&R as that will be a valuable resource.

I will indeed post pictures on this thread once i have finished the model, it wont be for a couple of months yet though, i have to finish my current project before i start making my MG. I'm just at the stage of gathering research and reference material for the MG.

I'll post the PDF I made in the technical section of my website. It is long out of copyright, and I'm not even sure the company exists anymore.

You're very welcome, Ant!

As an aside,Francis Precht's suggestion of scaling up a model reminds me of an occurance at an airfield many years ago.

A retired man, whose devoted ambition had been to make and fly his own aeroplane, had spent years scaling up a model Spitfire, and actually made it. It spent time on the tarmac awaiting the great day for the first flight but, to all who saw it, it never looked "quite right". You know what they say, "If it looks right, it'll fly right". This didn't. Everyone breathed a big sigh of relief when it veered off the runway on the first attempt, flipped and was totalled. We were pleased to say the pilot was unhurt, apart from his pride, of course.
G.E. Love

I too wanted to 'scale up' a Spitfire model ...found all the aluminum parts, had most of the instruments...but just couldn't find a large enough elastic band...damn!

Two Chevy V-6 in tandem would have worked nicely...
