MG TD TF 1500 - MG TD Almond Green Paint Code (New Zealand)

Dear all,
The following question was sent to us at ttypes.org by a member. I wonder if someone could help the asker - we'll forward on any responses and credit them accordingly. Thanks! Steve

My TD is an early car (http://ttypes.org/database/TD0351) which I am sure was originally Almond Green. The car is still painted green, but how close to the original colour I am not sure. At some time in the past it has had a bare metal respray so I cannot find a clue under the new paint.

There are various publications (such as Clausager's book) that quote paint codes for Almond Green. However, none of the paint suppliers here in New Zealand can recognise any of these codes, so I come up with a blank.

My question is to anyone who has found what they believe to be a correct and up to date paint code for an early MG TD Almond Green.

Thank You

As far as I know the original paint code for Almond Green has been recoded in "ROVER GN37 Almond Green".

See my radiator slats which I sprayed with this color.

Hope this helps...

Many thanks for the swift response, Jasper. We have forwarded the details you provided as well as your photo to Tony to give to his Kiwi paint suppliers.

Hi Steve,

Although I am only really experienced with seeing the original Almond Green(metallic) on TFs,I can say that at least from the photo, the colour Jasper has provided is not Almond Green.

One of the problems with matching 50s paint with modern day gear I suspect is that
the pigments are different and perhaps the paints are also made up in differing pigment proportions.

A TF friend of mine in WA used a GMH colour
which was very similar to the original colour, albeit slighlty lighter in shade.

<<Note: Apparently MG did not have strict formulas or consistent suppliers for their finishes, so even during the production of the T-Series there would be large discrepancies between cars of the same color. The cars were also not documented with their color on an ID plate. This practice did not start until the mgtf model in late 1953.

Note: CKD cars were delivered with primer only. This was also available as an orderable option so any paint color is original on one of these cars.>>

The paint code that I use is Rover GN37. The Moss catalogue refers for Almond Green to CCGN37 and the original BMC code was GN37. So I believe that my choice is correct.

On the other hand, the perception of color is a result of the color itself, the used pigments, the weather, our memory, the actual spraying, etc.

Conclusion: it's all in the eyes of the beholder...

IMHO:
Jasper hit the nail on the head!
"large discrepancies between cars" seems to be the norm for just about everthing on these cars.
Part of the "charm" of having a hand built auto I think!

Jasper,

Is the paint on your slats 'Almond Green' metallic?
Does'nt look like it in your photo? The original true Almond Green was in fact metallic!

An owner here in Western Australia has the first TF imported into the State. Some years ago I examined the bulkhead which fortunatley still had the original Almond Green paint on the bulkhead.

Rob,

No, this is not metallic.

As far as I know MG never used green metallic paint on TD's, only on TF's.
