MG TD TF 1500 - MG TD Brake Pedal Return Spring
I'm finishing up my restoration of a 1952 mg td and I have a brake pedal return spring and I know it goes on one end in the 'eyelet' hole at the bottom of the brake pedal shaft, but where does the other end go? |

Search the archives for "brake return spring". All will be revealed. Cheers, Lew Palmer |

There is a little tab with a hole in the forward side of the pedal box. The spring attaches there. You pretty much have to have the clutch rod removed to get the installation in. However, I've never been able to tell the difference in pedal movement and feel with and without the spring. My brakes work perfectly without it, but this winter I'm thinking of reinstalling it. warmly, dave |

After my experience with that box - I would run as fast as I can. Tim |

"My brakes work perfectly without it, but this winter I'm thinking of reinstalling it." Good grief Dave, are you a masochist? :) A large set of hemostats work well to get the spring in place. Cheers - Dave - won't go near that box again - DuBois |

Not a bad idea to have the spring, I drove for years without. The MC piston spring moves it back, and the rubber exluder and gravity pretty much move the pedal back. I second Dave D's comments- I either bruised or cracked a rib working on the !@^*&%@ pedal box a few years ago. George |

"I either bruised or cracked a rib working on the !@^*&%@ pedal box a few years ago" Just more reason for my philosophy regarding the pedal box - the ONLY time to work on that thing is when someone has a gun to your head! Cheers - Dave |

Or when you are restoring the car and the bare frame is up on jackstands! Easy then. As an added geographic bonus, our Florida sand packs in there with the grease. Makes a really horrible mess. When I injured myself, I somehow put one of the shaft washers on the wrong side, went to install the cover and the shaft stuck out too far. Not a pretty moment. George |
