MG TD TF 1500 - MG TD competing in Car of the Year - please vote!

Hello Everyone,

It was suggested that I start a new thread.

This is a new competition. I won the Nov 2011 competition with your support. Now the cars that won the 2011 monthly competition are competing for the "Car of the Year."

I wasn't aware of this competition until I received an email informing me that the TD was automatically entered.

Please vote by clicking on this link:

http://coolridesonline.net/news-and-blog/2011ROY.aspx

The competition runs until Feb 19, 2012. It has already begun. You can vote once each day.

Thanks again for your support!

Raj

Before I voted this morning (0545 EST) the TD was at .1778. After it was at .1781. The rounding makes it tough to be precise, but that would indicate that the TD had 487 votes out of a total of 2,741 after my vote. The Camaro went from .2077 down to .2076. There's a lot of statistical 'noise' in this series, but here's what I see from before/after my vote this morning:
Total votes cast ~2713
TD votes=505
Camaro votes=544
Vega votes=480
TransAm votes=469
The Camaro is still getting about 1 out of every 5 votes, the TD is increasing, the Vega is suddenly growing at a rapid rate.

***************************************
Hello Everyone,

Let me start by apologizing for intruding on this forum. I am usually active in the TD-TF forum. It was suggested that I solicit your support for my TD and the MG marque.

My TD won a ride of the month competition in November and got selected to compete in the Ride of the Year competition.

This online competition requires your support in the way of a vote once a day until Feb 19th. The TD is competing in a challenging race against American Muscle. Having said that, the MG community has demonstrated tremendous support and has pushed the TD to second place (out of 12).

I hope I can count on your support. Please click on the link below once every day and vote for your favorite Marque.

Well, here a nice initiative of Marjolein, head editor of MGTTO (MC T-Types & Pre War Owners Holland). She published the link on Twitter #MGTTO. Today I received from her the following email:

Dear Jasper,

Kelvin Fagan (“mgzs180”) is one of the followers of #MGTTO. He is a photographer, interested in MG’s and he lives in Cambridge, UK. Hence I asked him a couple of days ago if he already voted for the MG TD. He replied “I vote for the Trans Am”, and so I told him to be ashamed of himself. Yesterday he replied “I have actually voted for the MG”.

And CoolClassics (also a follower) who publishes the CoolClassicsDaily on the internet. See below under “stories” (scroll downwards) where they've mentioned the Coolridesonline link.

20.16%, 11:12 AM, Central, January 31, 2012. Now in third! For some reason(s), we are not getting the same results as we did for the month-of-November contest. Personally, I know it would be very satisfying to have one of our LBCs win this competition. Obviously, there are larger numbers of folks with ties to American "muscle" entrants. We should be able to mount more substantial votes than we have to date with dedicated effort. Keep plugging and spread the word!

Also, people can use iPhones and iPads for this competition.

Total votes cast ~2713

I have posted the following on the MG TA TB TC list and the MGA list.

Thanks,

Jerry
Jerry Chandler

LOL, Jasper, I used 6 different computers here in the office at work; all have different IP addresses. I also got others to join in so now have voted a total of 9 or 10 times today and will vote when I get home. Unfortunately, all this voting isn't making a surge forward as I would expect. There must be Camaro clubs and Vega clubs voting.

Richard Taylor TD3983

Richard,

Thanks for your reply. Are you sure that these votes were accepted? Have you checked that the message wasn't "we have already counted your vote" (or something like that)?

So instead I called in a lot of markers and had people vote on their phone and got 22 votes......Ok i lied, there were no markers i just begged a bunch. It's ok to beg if they are your friends. My wife and daughter are teachers and each voted four times at their respective schools. The three of use can vote one more time each from home. That's 33 votes. I actually saw us take second place after a work friend voted. I am here over the weekend and hope to get at least 15 votes a day. This is a tough race and I think this is the type of strategy that will help us win. We only have a couple weeks to go so everyone just keep pushig. This is actually a lot of fun.

Here are a few comments about us. You gonna let these guys win car of the year? ;) (I post this in jest, of course)

=====
- Why are they voting for that 1952 MG?
- COME ON YELLOW BULLET DONT LET A PHUCKIN MG BEAT A BULLET MEMBER!!!!
- So this Raj Douche is claiming superior intelligence
=====

To be fair there are also one or two guys who have complimented cars other than what they are voting for, so props to them for being the kind of car enthusiasts that are good for the hobby. It's just an online voting contest for cryin' out loud!
Steve S

We've got 22,38% of the votes against 23,01% for the Chevy.

This very morning I thought it's a good day to become #1 today, but at the moment I'm not so sure any more...

So keep on voting!

I'm getting uncomfortable with the statistics. Part of my morning routine (6am'ish EST) is to note the votes, cast my vote and then note the resulting vote. This takes less than a minute. This morning the vote, before I cast mine, was Camaro 23.37%, TD 23.08%. After my vote was cast it became Camaro 23.38%, TD 23.08%. Doesn't make sense unless 2 Camaro votes came in during the time it took me to cast my TD vote. Cold be. Bud

Jasper
Jasper L Nederhoed

We MUST have more voters for the MG, otherwise we cannot win this contest. And only 10 more days to go...

Maybe it's an idea to expand this battle between a Chevy and an MG towards a battle between US muscle cars and the British heritage of magnificent sportcars and saloons. In doing so we could approach sister clubs and affiliated clubs in the way Marjolein did for MGTTO, and persuade them to vote every day for Raj's TD.

I can imagine that owners of Alvis, Armstrong Siddeley, TVR, Rover, Singer, Mini, Austin, Morris, Morgan, RangeRover, Austin Healey, Riley, Jaguar, Rolls Roys, Lotus, Triumph, Vauxhall, etc. are willing to help us. But at the moment they don't know that there is a battle going on, and so we have to make them aware of that battle!

But how to reach these clubs? Via board members? Via our link posted on their respective bulletin boards? And who's going to take action?

Well, maybe this is a cry of a 'desperate' voter. If that's the case please forgive me...

Cheating isn't as hard as it sounds. There are ways to sit and click as many votes as you want, but it's dishonest and I'm not helping anyone win a competition by cheating. The large jump tonight by the Camaro could be due to the type of cheating I'm eluding to but there is no way to prove that without examining the server logs. More likely they found a new group to join in. Maybe the Vega guys gave up and joined to help a fellow Chevy win. If that's the case then forget about catching up.

I don't know what is going on myself. Usually in the evening he would pick up votes and increase his lead by .5 to 1%. But after we take the lead he surged to around 2.5%. I just do NOT want to believe that this race is being sabotaged. Such behaviour wouldn't be fair.

I rather believe that the developments of the last couple of days are the result of "If you cannot beat an MG, join the Camaro", so voters who used to vote for #3 to # 12 now vote for the Camaro. Just because they do not want the TD to win the race. That's a pity, but fair.

Jasper L Nederhoed

James has touched on one of the ways these things can be cheated. Votes are tracked based primarily on IP address. Using a proxy server changes your email address. If you're good enough, then you can vote 100 times in a row and gain a couple percent over everyone else in only a few moments. It appears at least one person on the Chevy forum has admitted to doing this. We could do the same, but I'd rather come in second honestly than win by cheating. Seriously, if they want to win that badly then just let them win.
Steve S

Received from a fellow Ttyper who's a voter:
I am participating in the Car of the Year voting and offer the following observation:
It seems that a 1977 Camero has received a large number of votes for which no sensible explanation exists.
There were only 29,664 TDs manufactured.
Of those, approximately half have survived and are lovingly restored.
Since 1967, over five million Cameros have been built.
The total number of survivors is determined as follows:
2,300,000 rusted on the showroom floor and were scrapped,
1,600,000 were destroyed when they hit stop signs,
565,000 were abandoned by the side of the road once the ashtray was full,
325,000 were deliberately set on fire,
88,000 were donated to charities selling tickets to smash them.
79,000 were declared to have no value when they ran out of gas,
23,000 were destroyed in demolition derbies (if they could get them started),
15,000 failed attempts to jump a 1/43-scale school bus.
5,000 are still registered, but their fate is uncertain.
None is insured.
Of these fugitives, none has ever been restored.
All received new engines, transmissions, carriers, and latex paint jobs.
Consequently, they are forbidden within 200 miles of Pebble Beach and Amelia Island.
All this leads to only one conclusion:
Past Camero owners are voting with their smart phones while walking to work.
Bud
Bud Krueger

Isnt Chevy still making camaros?
Adam Defibaugh

YBTTFMF? I say chap, that is quite clever! Say, is it true that at Pebble Beach and Amelia Island, MG's get parked in the weeds? WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
PR Revere

There will be no parking in the bloody weeds for me mate. I did however run head on into a duck there once.
JL Pettimore

Did MG engineers help design this site?
MBS Brightside

Blimey! A duck! Well I once spun out when some fellow in a "Camero" exploded his gearbox in front of me. Got transmission fluid all over my bonnet! Ever heard of a bloke named CAPSLOCK?
PR Revere

CAPSLOCK? Sounds vaguely familiar. Believe he is in the drysweep business.
JL Pettimore

Yes he is! Ran into him while eating some icecream and listening to my $30 radio!
PR Revere

Same bloke then, small bloody world. I've experience my share of troublesome Camaro owners over the years. One knob I know has one that has been on jackstands for years.
JL Pettimore

A radio you say? That is absurd!
Adam Defibaugh

Have you ever noticed that the only thing a Camaro owner can get to rise up is the front of their car? Compensation issues?

Gene Gillam

I heard that same chap gave up jackstand racing for riding camels??????
PR Revere

Do camels respond to ice cream like a MG though?
Adam Defibaugh

Yes mate, that's him. I hear he feeds the camel a diet of icecream and cannabis.
JL Pettimore

Pretty sketchy prospect of getting a radio wired up on the camel though.

Still in second place as of this morning 2-12-2012.
Jim Merz

Hi guys, welcome to the site. Gotta say though, as a vintage Chevy enthusiast I'm dismayed at all the hatred and malice for fellow classic car nuts that I've read over there. Our classic car group here in California has a lot of Chevy owners in it and we all feel the same way about what we've seen in the past few days.

An appreciation for all things automotive is what keeps our hobby alive and thriving (as well as fun), and keeps future generations interested.

By the way, most of the people on this site are Americans.
Steve S

Yall accused us of cheating. YBTTFMF
Adam Defibaugh

steve, the hatred was started by one of your guys.

"Have you ever noticed that the only thing a Camaro owner can get to rise up is the front of their car? Compensation issues?"

If you have been to the site, you have seen it has a large variety of different cars. Like mine for an example, it is a 1967 Shelby mustang with a carbon body and a blown 521" Hemi that makes about 3800 hp.

Here is YB's info Threads: 407,793, Posts: 7,871,084, Members: 59,345

So when you have 59K members there will always be hatred. But as you can tell, when something needs to be done, we all join forces. Hence the term YBTTFMF's
LM Bullet

Come on, what's it all about? You like your car, I like mine, let's keep it that way.
M. van Gessel-Bannink

Camaro on Dutch TV (Wereld op Wielen), not convinced (yet?). Too many muscles for me, I guess.
M. van Gessel-Bannink

Seems the muscle car crowd is substantially bigger indeed if these numbers are true. So it will be an uphill battle, but let´s keep voting anyway...

You all made it personal. Im thinking we need to really show the power of the Bullet an drop this car to 3rd.. Hmmm YBTTFMF!!!

Wait a minute...you join OUR forum, make fun of OUR cars and then say WE made it personal by posting something on OUR forum?

Something sounds backwards there.
Gene Gillam

Actually LM, no one here accused anyone of cheating. It was one of your own who admitted to it.

Quote: "I voted 8 times on different proxied IP addresses, should be good enough for tonite"

Yeah, we saw it before the post was deleted.

Before anyone here knew the Bullett forum even existed, trash was being talked over there, so for those on the Chevy forum who are claiming some M.G. forum made it personal, that isn't the case. Of course once the sewage leaks from one forum to another, everyone gets dirty. Just an unfortunate reality of life in the internet age.

You're spot on about such a huge membership being impossible to keep tame at times. I've been online since long before there was an internet and believe me, one or two rotten apples can ruin the fun for thousands.
Steve S

YB isnt a chevy forum.....
Adam Defibaugh

YBTTFMF.....WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Nothing gets deleted from The Bullet
YBTTFMF

The bullet isnt a Chevy forum. Lots of different kind of cars, bikes etc. We are all car fans in general. The most of us have a racing background. Our forum bands together when someone is in need, power in numbers folks... YBTTFMF!!!
Tank

My apologies, I hadn't wandered around your forum to see what it was all about. Please re-read my previous post and substitute "Chevy forum" with "car forum". ;)

The Yellow Bullet guys got it covered I think.

We did scare them though. They have a thread titled: 'Yellowbullet is f*cking losing!!!! Thats right, WE are sucking wind!!!' http://www.yellowbullet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=448676&page=52

The comments on their forum remind me of the Top Gear episode in which they visit the southern states of the US of A. This voting thing now feels as if we are chased by a flatbed truck filled with mean looking 'Mericans waving their guns. And we are laughing all the way!

Keep up the voting to keep them on their toes!

Willem vd Veer

Willem, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it, if they want to cheat the socks off the contest (see comments from "Monkey Grip" this morning):

"I JUST PUT ANOTHER 2 VOTES IN! DONT LET UP ON THESE F***ERS!!!"

My other three-quarters - also a petrol-head and runs her own pc - will add our 2 votes each day and we'll see what happens.

If someone else wants to turn it all into Fred Karno's, that's up to them

But, irrespective. Q.E.D.

I've been wondering what YBTTFMF means.

I guess it isn't: Yellow Bullet, The Totally Fantastic MG Friends. ;-)
Willem vd Veer

Yikes ...now I know what happened to all those Camaro owners I used to blow the doors off of with my Firebird!
(Most of them were not very nice, and had "an excuse" back then as well.) ;-)! LOL
David Sheward

Just few minutes on the yellow bullet forums reminds me why I quit participating in most on-line venues years ago. Too many folks posting from behind a pseudonym whose only contribution is to bad mouth someone elses ride, abilities, or point of view. Really helps promote the hobby as a whole...not.
Really makes me thankful to have found such a decent and truly helpful group as frequents this BBS. Many thanks to Raj and Gene for keeping our old cars in the public eye. Dan

Dan,

I'll drink one on that! Cheers!

And remember, keep voting!

I'll drink one on Raj, Jasper and Dan. Sounds more like it. And I will keep voting!!
M. van Gessel-Bannink

I'll just keep on drinking!
Even though I can't hold it like I used too.

Heck I got drunk on 2 beers the other day.....

#'s 24 & 25 ...that's the "2" that did it.
David Sheward

Willem:

"I've been wondering what YBTTFMF means.

Here you go:

"TTF" means "To The Front."

You've got "YB" figured out and I guess you'll have no trouble with the "MF."

;-)

Cheers!!!

BobbyG - still voting for the benefit of a larger audience.

Bobby Galvez

And here I thought it was Yellow Bellied Twinkle Tushed Fat Miserable Failures...but I may be wrong.
Gene Gillam

Where did all the fun go?

You're right...no matter what the outcome will be: it's still our party!

Happy Valentine!

Thanks Bobby,
I'll say the MF is My Friend(s), but fear the worst.

Gene,
Is it a Southern State thing to go ugly on this?

David,
I always thought that a Firebird was a Camaro in a fancy suit, but correct me if I'm wrong...?
Willem vd Veer

Well, we're staying about 5 points behind the Camaro and 10 ahead of the Vega.

Let's just keep voting. Can't let the "MFer's" pee in our punch.

And no, Willem, "MF" in their parlance is not "My Friend." ;-)

BobbyG
Bobby Galvez

"Where did all the fun go?"

A question Detroit has been trying to figure out for a number of years now!

Willem,
The main differance (other than suttle "trim & styling") would be one of engine choices.
Something more than a few Camaro owners learned in my somewhat miss-spent youth.
David Sheward

Willem,
Not a southern state thing at all. I'm just expressing in the nicest manner possible (you should have seen some of the other ideas I came up with) my disdain for a group of car(?) enthusiasts(?) with absolutely no regard for our little cars.

And you think they're not ugly? How about these samples:

"Only a Cock Jockey would vote for that MG.... I can't believe it's that close."
"I just voted on 3 computers and a phone. When I get to work tomorrow I will vote on every computer in the damn courthouse. Phuck a mg!!"
"The comments on that site are phuckin funny... They think pretty highly of themselves..."

and that's just through post 64 of 882.
Gene Gillam

Those guys are like school in summer....................... No class!
LaVerne

Hi Gene,

I agree that you were extremely civil compared with our YB friends. You DO NOT want to read the comment #870 by 'Coops' (from Australia?).

Dear Mr. Coops,

We respect your condition and won't hold it against you. We will all pray that the man(/men?) who caused this in your youth will be punished.

With such a maniac in their midst I do understand that other YB members are afraid to speak up against such an outpour.

If, however you think Aussie Coops has gone too far, what's stopping you to vote for the MG instead of the Camaro?

Nobody will know (until it's too late, that is). :-)

The thread is back and we'll have a few more days to get Raj's MG to #1
@mgtto submitted a lot of tweets, hoping that all 250 "car freak" followers will vote for the TD.
M. van Gessel-Bannink

So far a good solid 2nd. Would love to push to #1 but look at the other competition, Raj and the TD are doing very well.
Brian Smith (1950 TD3376)

We are all proud of a solid 2nd. place for Raj and his TD. His car will be featured in our clubmagazine Square Front.
