MG TD TF 1500 - Mounting - girling front shocks
Hi! I would like to know how the front shocks should be assembled and mounted on the mg td. Seen from the filler cap, the girling shocks are not symmetrical; the distance from the center of the filler cap to each end of the wishbone mounting point is not the same. One end is longer than the other. When mounted correctly should the short or the longer end be facing forward? |

The front shocks are not handed. The will fit right or left side. The shafts only go in 1 way, as they are stepped, and the casting and bushings are sized appropriately. You are correct that they are not symmetrical to the filler cap, but they are symmetrical to the mounting holes. The filler cap is not in the middle because the valve body is cast into one side of the shock. When mounted on the right side of the car, the valve body will be toward the rear of the car, and on the left, the valve body will be toward the front. Hope that helps. Peter ![]() |

Hey Peter, is that one of mine that I sent you last week? Thanks for getting on it! David |

No....LOL that's one from John Gunnel's TDs. He wants us to take pictures of the whole process for some book or article I guess. These were a real rusty mess. A lot of the pictures have sparks, blue flames and smoke! Peter ![]() |
