MG TD TF 1500 - Mowog 1500 identification

Hi, I am restoring a 1952 MGTD but the engine is a Mowog 1500 and I am trying to identify it so that I can rebuild with correct parts. It has 1500 stamped on the block along with 1H858 and the AF4. Does anyone have a clue what this might be from?

MOWOG stod for MOrris WOlseley mG and I think was a BMC naming convention. You may have an MGA 1500 engine. What side are the carburetors on - left or right as viewed from the driver's seat looking forward?

Don't know how this will come up.

The only 1489cc engine listed with a 1H prefix was fitted to the Austin A50 Cambridge.

Was the A50 exported to USA?

Ian, I seem to recall that BMC also used 1H for Gold Seal engines. Geoff, is there any gold paint on that motor? Perhaps under what's there?
kmclemore

Hi, thanks all. The engine was painted green, no sign of gold. The carbs are on the left side of the engine, opposite to the MGTD.
Geoff
G Fretwell

Sounds like some kind of a B series engine.
Jack Long

Austin Cambridges were certainly exported to North America -- Canada for sure. My mother bought one in Toronto c. 1958-1960. So it's not a stretch to think that an engine might have eventually settled south of the border(especially after the Canada US free trade auto pact)... even if Austin did not sell the A50s and A55s in the USA . --Peter
