MG TD TF 1500 - Nardi wheel frame

Found this frame at Bronte a couple of weeks ago...it was pretty corroded.
Sanded it with 360 up to 2000 grit emery paper and had a brass polisher put it on his wheel(s).
Am deciding on wood or "cord" to finish the rim?

Gordon,

Will look great on an old Alfa but please not on a TD.

Cheers

Have seen lots of Brookland 4 spokes on TD's... will see how it looks when finished.....

Gordon - I had one of those Nardi wheels on our MGB, but because of it's smaller diameter, it made the car steer hard, so we gave it to our daughter for her GT. Besides the guy had ruined by scratching his name into one of the spokes. Cheers - Dave

This one is 15" to the outside of the frame... with wood/whatever that should be pretty close to stock... anyway... just one more "personal" touch to the car...(my stock one is pretty bad.....)

Go Gordon, have fun. It's your car, and hardly irreversible. Maybe a satin finish on the wood? I think it came out smashing.

Interesting email back from Nardi (Italy)... They didn't have a reference for that style of frame (?) They will rebuild the wheel by adding a mahogany/with black stripe rim for 360.00 Euro ($521.00 CAD)
Think i will go with plan A.... do it myself!

Gordon;
Have you looked at John Stone's mahogany wheel rim on the TABC Site. Under technology he shows how he re-rimmed a wheel for a TC. I am considering doing the same for a TD wheel that I have.

Sandy's comment made me curious so I looked for the link to John Stone's mahogany wheel. It is impressive!

I do believe that customized steering wheels are way cool on the TD and TF. The cheap little wheel they installed at the factory almost begs to be replaced by something beautiful and wood grained.

I did read somewhere (probably here) that racing regulations had a large impact for safety (pun not intended) on the use of wood wheels. The splinters removed from some drivers' chests were impressive. The requirement of mulitple fastening points resulting in smaller shattered pieces of wood was the result.

Well, i started the wood for the wheel this week...still not sure how it will "turn" out... might still go for a cast plastic (black) rim...just not sure what product to search for...will know after i turn down the wood....

Gordon my compliments on your Nardi wheel efforts. I think it will turn out nicely.

Worth the effort.

Gordon, this is a photo (if I uploaded to this site correctly) of a steering wheel I have in progress. I used a TD wheel which had bad plastic, and sandwiched solid walnut for a rim. I am at the stage now of installing brass rivets, which I am looking for. I painted the hub black as the original tan was nondescript with the walnut.

Gordon,
I'm with you....I think the TD/TF screams for a nice wood wheel! Another big advantage of a "bit smaller" one for me would be a bit less rubbing on my "OSH reserve"! Go for it!
When you get it done I can do the old "flip-flop" and tell you how bad it looks and how you should sell it (cheap) to me! LOL!
Cheers,

I'll try again with a link to the photo of the wood steering wheel project.(This is a new photo share site and I have a learning curve) This is solid American walnut sandwiched to an original wheel frame.

Thanks everyone for your patience - The wood wheels are a fun project.

That turned out great, Dallas. Very nice!

Latest update... seems to be taking forever...all i do is wait for glue to dry....

Nice, Gordon. Are you going to rivet the wood to the rim? Maybe some epoxy too? How about the hub? Any progress there?
Tom

I added (see pic) aluminum rivets around the rim...have to trim them and sand along with the rim....The edge of the frame should sand down to a shine along with the rivets.
gordon lawson - TD 27667

Half the rim was epoxied to the frame, then the other rim was "carpenter" glued in place and clamped. The rivets were epoxied through the spokes and rim.

Got a fair amount done this morning....

Gordon,

I'm very, very impressed. Nice work.

Gordon,
I certainly hope you are not going to but that on your TD...it will lower the worth of the car by at least 1/2!
I can step in at this point and offer to "save you" for $5.00 as I think that might fit on my Ranch King. No need to thank me ...after all, what are friends (and/or lawyers) for?
Cheers,

On a totally unrelated subject ....anybody know if steering wheel is same for a TF as a TD?

LOL ...Dude...you do really nice work!
David Sheward

Looks great!

Ok... I'm done now...

By coincidence this showed up on as an ad one of my ebay searches- here is a link to a ebay seller that has several Nardi wheels for sale-

Wish someone could tell me what the 4 spoke one is from... even Nardi in Italy wasn't aware they had ever made a 4 spoke?
gordon lawson - TD 27667

Gordon,
You forgot to add the traditional closing in your photo caption of total cost:

"Rim: $10.00, wood (maple): $10.00, aluminum dowel: $2.50, glue and sandpaper: $ 5.00, hub on ebay: $18.00"

...level of satisfaction: Priceless!
