MG TD TF 1500 - New Carpet Sets

I am shopping for a new black carpet set for my TF. I see Moss, Heritage, Abingdon and the Krazy Karpet guy on ebay. What experience do you all have with carpet purchases in the last year or two?
My TF is NOT a show car.

I used a moss set about 15 years ago. The carpet closely matched what the correct carpet was, but it did not hold up well. I replaced it with a set from Abingdon. I have since installed three sets from Abingdon, and have been happy with each. My only gripe with the Abingdon set is the carpet that goes over the cross brace behind the seat has a raw edge at the top. I brought this piece to a local shop and had a piece of vinal stictched over the edge to trim it. The Abingdon set comes with a nice trimmed piece to lay over the rear shelf. On the TD, this was left bare plywood when the car was new. I did not install this piece, it is just sitting on the rear shelf. I just pull it out at shows. It makes a great mat for tools and such.

Not knocking any of the commercial sets, but the carpeting in a T car is pretty basic and straight forward... getting some black marine type carpet and fitting them would be easy and edging them is a 10 minute job at an upholsterer's..... might work out about half the price.....

I used the Moss set but went with a non standard install. The rear shelf and floors just sit in place, not secured in anyway and they don't go anywhere. Rear cross panel, Trans and driveshaft tunnel are held in place with magnets. I bought extra carpet and did the kick panels forward by the toe panel and held those in place with magnets as well. Just couldn't bring myself to punch holes in the metal after I had patched up the mess I started with. Seems to be working very well and is extremely easy to remove.

The Moss pieces fit rather wonky around the tunnels I thought but did work out ok. Should have included an ebrak boot IMO.

I believe they were all unfinished, but all the kits are edged.....They fit in such a way that the edges cover other unfinished edges (so you don't see the sides of any)

The original carpting in the T-Series was a product called Karvel. Originally manufactured by John Crossley & Sons, Halifax, England. Karvel was widely used in many British Cars including MG.

For many years, it wasn't available, but Heritage in Vancouver, bought the looms and the rights and are producing repro Karvel T-Series carpet sets.

My neighbour up the road recently bought a set for his restored TC - beautiful.

I was thinking along the same lines as Gordon until I thought about the transmission tunnel piece. Not something I could do between it and the lever gator. The only other piece thats not straight forward is the rear tunnel piece which is board backed and sewn edged. I've got the Moss carpet in both the TF and TD and have no complaints other than black's a tough color to keep clean.

The tunnel piece, although looks tricky the way it sits, does just have one seam below the hole and edging around the hole....(if my memory serves me)...with an original opened up, you would have a pattern.

I want my carpet to have trim on the edges. Looks neater with a better finish. I have emailed Heritage, but no reply. Are they a victim of the economy?

Hi All:

I bought a TF carpet set from Heritage and the quality is 1st class. There is no look like the original carpet but it is expensive. The original carpet has rows (sometimes called corn rows) that can not be duplicated by any other type of material. These rows run parallel to the length of the car and really add to the original character of the interior. Even if the car is just a runner this interior is worth it as it will last and wear for years just as the originals did.

The untrimmed edges suite the car and the original type carpet. When you compare the unfinished edge look to that of cheaper carpet with finished edges the Heritage wins hands down.

Installation is not just lay it in and forget it - it took me the better part of an afternoon and I have a lot of upholstery background. I believe that Heritage uses dies to cut the carpets to size. The advantage of the untrimmed edge is that you can custom adjust the carpet for a perfect fit to your car.

The only problem I had with the Heritage carpet is that the small cover over the drive-shaft tunnel had the “corn rows: running side-to-side rather than parallel. Heritage offered to fix this but since they had supplied extra carpet I was able to do this myself because I have an upholstery sewing machine.

When you install the drive shaft cover it should be moulded over the tunnel not just bent. To do this:
1. Soak a towel and wring it out fairly dry
2. Double the towel over and lay it on the paper-board back of the drive-shaft tunnel cover. Leave over night.
3. Next day bend the cover over a tin can the same diameter as the drive-shaft tunnel and hold with tape. Let dry for 24 hours.
4. When you install the cover the excess sides should be bent at 90 degrees to lay flat on the floor. This is done by dampening the lines to be bent and then scoring with a screen door roller (looks like a small pizza cutter). The end result will exactly match the original.

If anyone wants clarification on carpet installation just drop me an e-mail I will be glad to give any help I can. As you can see in the attached image I opted for red rather than the original black but the effect is pretty good.

Thanks for the comment about the set on ebay. I call him the Krazy Karpet man. Question is, as anyone on the BBS bought a set from him? I'd like a comment on fit and quality before I go to the trouble.
JC, thanks for the comment on Heritage. I think I'll stay away from "very expensive" for my humble TF.

I bought a set for my TF from Heritage also in red.

They did not fit the TF, the rear carpets were 2 inches too wide and too long, the fronts were one inch too wide, and there was no provision for the passenger foot rest.

Unfortunately, I had had the edged. They re-edged them for me after I cut them to fit. I sent the the pattern made from my original carpets, but they declined to use them.

You mention the only problem you had with
the Heritage carpet was that " corn rows running side to side rather than parallel".
Originally,the carpet over the tunnel did in fact lay side to side!

My TF had some stuff in it with "foam backing" (so did my eye's, ears, nose, & throat!)
The carpet look great ...the "dust storm" was miserable when you drove it at speed.

Gordon can tell you how he got rid of it ...bet he still has some "Orange Dust". LOL

I scraped every square inch of the back of that carpet for hours....got it 'all' off and haven't seen 'orange' since....of course, I glued felt underpad on it before I installed it.... (still in there Dave and the patina matches the car....)

I replaced most of my carpet last year because the factory carpet was brittle and wearing through. I found the best match to be a very cheap nylon carpet which I bought by the metre and cut using the originals as patterns. The nylon carpet is a cut-pile and has a slight 'cornrow' effect. It also has a sealed back so will not fray. In the photo you will see where I have kept the original carpet on the tunnel, although it is very thin. The rexine/viny edge is first stitched to the carpet (face to face) then stitched to the fibre board. I still have all my original carpet if anyone wants details.

Photo showing the new carpet, except for the arched piece behind the dipper switch which is still factory. It does not look this shiny to the eye. Carefull handcutting to fit will keep most edges hidden and a little matt black spray paint will make exposed edges less obvious. Original RHD TF heelmat sewnback in its original position. Common mistake: TC heelmats or cut-down USA heelmats used on RHD TF carpets.
