MG TD TF 1500 - New Heater...

A friend of mine found another 'Harrison Heater'...same as I installed a couple of years ago... They were installed in various vehicles (pickup trucks, etc) with the copper tubes going through the firewall....
The ones I have came with a 6 volt motor which I reduced (ballast from a Chrysler or something)...anyway...it has never blown very much air, so I thought I would update it.....
My plan is to now take the hot water from the thermostat housing to get a bit hotter water...!!

Gordon,

The hottest accessible spot on the engine is around #4 cylinder.

I built my whole heater system around taking hot water from the plate bolted to the rear of the head. The return pipe (copper) runs under the exh. manifold. Clean, and no hoses running through the engine compartment. This system has been installed and running well for 50 years!

The whole system was written up in the TSO (forget which issue). If you want a copy, let me know and I'll find one somewhere.

I get plenty of heat.

Judging from the posting of the water transfer through the engine a while back, the water at the thermostat housing has to be much hotter then at the rear of the engine? Anyone have one of those thermometers that you aim at items to get the temp?

Harrison is, or was, the radiator "arm" of GM. Don't know when that became so, or when or if it still is, but for many years GM rads said Harrison on them.

I'd be curious to know how long and how well the computer fan works. Some people say they don't like heat. I have a few dozen of them, brand new, that were taken out of rack systems, because they have Teflon thrust bearings. In the application, they were mounted horizontally, and just the weight of the fan caused the Teflon to cold flow, leading to excessive end float and noise. They were replaced OEM with ball thrust units.

Interesting... will let you know when/if it fails.... Out of all the ones on the shelf, this particular size seemed to jump up to a stronger set up...all steel case instead of plastic, etc....

Gordon Lawson, I think you are correct about the location of the hottest water in the cooling system. As I understand it, the water is directed through the square section on the right side of the block directly from the radiator to the back of the head. The factory placed a fitting on the elbow below the thermostat for a heater on the later TFs for that reason.
