MG TD TF 1500 - Nice Mark II TD on eBay

The seller says there have been some questions about whether this is a Mark II or not, which is why he seems a bit coy about it:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1952-MG-T-Series-Competition-Options-/332027795888?forcerrptr=true&hash=item4d4e6619b0:g:L2cAAOSw8gVX6n3B&item=332027795888

It's an absolutely genuine Mark II TD/C car, and nearly all there - missing the Andrex shocks but looking like a quite nice, straight-forward car. I don't know how much he expects to get; it is at $14,600, but has not reached the reserve.

I could see un-chroming a bit (door hinges, headlight bars, etc.), getting the correct ignition switch and ammeter, finding a clock and switching the threshold plates, and having a very nice, more than presentable TD/C car. This one feels like an honest car to me (I have absolutely no stake in it).

Looks like he is using the engine number as the VIN.

That happened almost always in California, but also in other states. The Guarantee plate and engine tag are shown in the eBay listing, so there is no question that all is correct and jibes.

With my production Records I can do reverse look-ups, so if all someone has is an engine number, I can tell them to which car that engine was originally fitted.

Are the MK II badges in the right place? I've never seen them placed on the aft portion of the bonnet.
Kevin McLemore

They don't belong anywhere on this car. Only the later cars had the appearance package.

That thing has been snapped to death. :-)

Two things I do like that you don't often see. The body piping is a great match to the body colour & some considerable time has been spent getting the orientation, relationship & angle of the radiator slats just about perfect. I also like the fact that it's Ivory. :-) I may be wrong but I did think that TD/C's originally had chromed slats or was that an early/late thing? Cheers

I believe the parts book shows TD/C22613 as the beginning of what I call the appearance package, which included chrome radiator slats, MARK II bonnet badging on both front sides and on a special bumper plinth, under-dash passenger grab handle, black on white emblems, etc.

I have seen cars before that number with some of these appearance features, which may be factory or may have been added by later owners (as in this TD), to highlight the special nature of the car.

Chris - I'm not sure what you mean by "snapped to death?"

All the tonneau cover snaps along the body and doors. No need for that. One of my pet peeves.

Too many "snaps," too much chrome, and MkII trim badges etc. on this one that likely does not belong on it--- all symptoms of an early (1960's/early 1970's) "restoration." Maybe also the screws popping out on the threshold plates from rust emerging from underneath. On the other hand, it appears only one early restoration to contend with to make it right.

Here is a record of the car. Has the engine matching.

Love that "snapped to death" line. A couple of things puzzle me. e.g., why doesn't the speedometer match the 4.875 gearing? It's a 1600 tpm unit, rather than 1522. Too bad someone painted the steering hub and instrument panel that color. Bud

We have a so-called TD "Mark II" in our area. It has been sold and re-sold a few times, always as a Mark II, and at Mark II prices which it is not. Its a very clever re-creation of a Mark II, but on one occasion, I happened to see it in the paint shop, with the front wings off, and I can certify that it did NOT display the requisite TD/C designation ahead of the chassis nbr. on the left dumb iron.

For the same reason, If I were interested in this TD, I would demand on seeing the chassis nbr on the dumb iron.
