MG TD TF 1500 - No power,Stalls out

Starts and idles well, when in nuetral will rev up without hesitation or problems. While in drive a 100 yards or less will bog down and actually stall, can start immediately, again no problem running as long as not under load. Fresh good flow of gas, brakes not hung up ( on four jack stands wheels turn freely). Not a real mechanic but a lifelong driveway "putterer". Where should I start looking have gone through archives: should I be looking at having the distributor rebuilt, should I have the compression checked( engine sounds good no smoke, oil leak etc). Any suggestions where I should start looking or do would be greatly appreciated (FYI Transmission recently rebuilt with support of Bud K)

Sounds like a carbie issue,,, have you set them up reciently??? Do the pistons moved easily and in sync???Is the float set properly ??? Is the timing set properly??

Check your breather for an obstruction or maybe bent. Sounds like what happened to Horst Schach after the restoration in the MG TD restoration manual or could be a timing issue.

Thanks for the feedback, actually I don't have a breather pipe and the outlet is clear. To clarify the issue the engine will rev without hestitation in nuetral without a miss or any delay. The bogging done with no power is under a load ( in gear) will commence in second or even third so it doesn't seem to be a clutch issue or any of the running gear

Jon, the amount of fuel needed to rev the engine when not under load is much less than is needed to propel the car. There are a few screens in the fuel delivery system. You might want to check them. There's one inside of the fuel pump. Easy to check. There should be one in each banjo bolt connection to the carburetors, again, easy to check. The other one is not quite so easy. It's a screen inside of the outlet connection at the bottom of the fuel tank. You'll want to drain the tank to get it out. I'd give you a hand but I'm committed to take Paul to D-F today. Good luck. Once again thanks for the insight ,it most likely is the filter in the tank . I disconnected the fuel line before the pump (which wasn't putting much out and clicking slowly) and blew the line back under pressure and the vehicle performs well. I still haven't "douched" the tank out but I might epty it out and disconnect the filter and check it out. Give me an email/call on the side re: PH

Fellow in our club just had the same issue. It was at the fuel pickup inside the tank. Dirt there would clog it up once he started moving. He cleaned it out and "Bob's your uncle!"

Jon - See the article, Fuel Delivery Troubleshooting Guide in the SU Fuel Pump Articles section of my web site at: http://homepages.donobi.net/sufuelpumps/ and run the tests that I detail in it.

Blowing air back into the tank will clear any debris from around the filter screen initially, but as soon as you start pumping fuel put of the tank, the debris will immediately start coating the screen, obstructing fuel flow. If there is debris in the tank, the only way to combat it is to have the tank completely cleaned. When you are doing that, it would be wise to have the inside of the tank coated to eliminate any further rust build up. Cheers - Dave

PS. If the fuel flow from tank, through the pump is good, your next check should be the timing of the ignition.

Jon. Hello. good day to you. it is importent that the veent/ overflow tube on the float chamber is functioning properly. If there is no air coming in to the chamber you will not get any fuel through the carb. Check the washer for the overflow pipes.

Thanks to all, now running like a top crude in the line/filter tank to pump. Will have to R&R tank but for now spliced in a port before the pump and I'm carrying a 5 gallon pressurized air tank. Thanks for all the info and in fact Dave D's website with the trouble shooting and other great articles is gold mine. Omnce again I've successfully stumbled through with all of support.
