MG TD TF 1500 - Octagons - I Hate Them !

I have just been repairing the radiator shroud from my MG J2 and the MG badge had a small boss on the rear to support the securing thread. This was fouling the nose piece and a couple of m/m needed removing so the badge could lie flat. However, Cecil Kimber decided that octagons were the thing, rather than hexagons, so I had to fit a four jaw chuck to my lathe and then spend time centering the badge using the independent jaws. If he had taken a fancy to hexagons the job would have been simple using a three jaw, self centering chuck.

Yes, I feel the same when I have do that, but its easier than making a special tool to hold the part you are machining. Wouldn't be without it.

Be happy its not one of the winged badges like Lagonda.

Good work Jan.

Guys with lathes - I hate them! ;)

The two things I'd love to have are a garage & a lathe. I'm just envious. My car is 8 klm away underneath a block of flats. Cheers

I should shut up, at least I have a garage. ;)

I use the black hot glue stick used for paintless dent removal to attache parts like that to a dowel and then put that into my chuck. Keep the speed low and it will work fine. When done, a little alcohol and it pops right off.

Lapidary glue used to polish gems and stones might also work.

Hi Bruce
I used a similar technique when I turned down a core plug but I soldered on a brass stub rather than using glue. Your method would be great for aluminium or stainless. The core plug was for the rear of the engine block on a friend's TD and because of the lack of space I used my lathe to make up a duplex plug that can be installed with a spanner. The lathe enabled a five minute fitting rather than a full day lifting the engine.

Jan. I thought you were talking about the radiator badge with the enamel front. For a metal piece, yep, weld or solder.
Bruce Cunha

Hi Bruce,

It was the front badge I was referring to. The core plug was a separate job. My friend had a box of them but none fitted the hole in the rear of the block. I soldered a boss to the centre of a large one so I could turn down the edge.

Cheers
