MG TD TF 1500 - Oil Change HELP needed with filter

Okay, I've drained the oil, I got the filter canister out (after a bit of swearing and thinking I'd have to take a lot of other things out first), now I can't get the canister open to replace the filter. I'm sure this is a replacement from the original, given the large nut on the bottom. I can get it to budge even with a pipe wrench (hard to hold on to a round object, but I'm trying). Am I missing some trick to get this thing open?

If you couldn't guess, this is my first oil change I've ever done... on any car. So any and all advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Several types possible- horizontal canister? Vertical with two pipes attached? Makes a difference. Picture would help also. George

Vertical with two pipes attached (one up top and one on the side). Large (presumably aluminum) nut at the bottom. My phone that takes pictures is very slow, so I don't have a picture at the moment.

It's a '51 TD.

With picture.

According to Moss "A bottom plug unscrews easily to allow changing the inexpensive filter cartridge."

Are you sure your turning the plug the correct way to undo. I dont own a TD however I presume you should not have to remove the canister to change the cartridge, my imagination is running riot, I presume the canister clamping bracket on the engine was designed to hold the canister during this process.

As you have the canister removed I would be looking for a "strap wrench" to hold it while you undo the plug using a suitable socket spanner.

That is indeed the type Moss came out with a few years back, never worked on one. Graeme's advise spot on- a regular strap oil filter wrench should hold the body nicely. If you cant get it open, try one of the spin-on adaptors listed in the link. I have used one of Bob's adaptors for years. http://www.mgexp.com/phorum/read.php?46,2324037,page=2
