MG TD TF 1500 - oil for TF1500 air cleaner

Just re-tuned the SU carburetors on my TF 1500, and cleaned the air cleaner element. Is Penrite SAE 25W-50 engine oil OK to re-oil the element? It seems a bit on the heavy side and I wonder if it might make the engine run a bit rich.

It can be any thick oil to grab some of the passing dust. Let the elements drain onto some paper before fitting and the engine will not be affected.

Do you fellows always oil your filters? PJ
Paul S Jennings

I don't...didn't think you were supposed to...

Me neither Dave. Maybe in extreme dusty conditions it might be beneficial, but we don't have that problem here. I guess it has to do with the part of the world we live in. From what I've seen of Ireland and the UK, it's all green! PJ

Hmmm, How about that! I have K&N filter oil. I guess that would be ok to use on a TF filter. Yes/no?
Paul S Jennings

K$N oil works just fine. I have also used a light spray of ATF on the washable filters. For those that use paper filters... do not oil.

I have not had to remove the front TF air filter yet. Is there an easy way to do it without disassembling the front end of my car?
thanks,

How about the inner felt element, does that get oiled too?

Some dust for the uninitiated. :-)

No need to oil the felt JB.

Thanks Matthew - I have gone ahead with the Penrite oil, and all went well on the road test this morning.

The four bolts attaching the two air cleaners are certainly awkward to get at, Tyler. Some patience is required because its a struggle to get more than a sixth of a turn each time. I considered cutting one end off an old 1/4 - 5/16 spanner to make it shorter in the confined space, but in the end I didn't have to do that.

Before putting them back I made sure the threads were clean and turned easily so that I was able to run them right in with my fingers before nipping up with the spanner.

I've put K&N filter elements in mine. They are a bit smaller in diameter, and a bit thicker, but a bit of fiddling and spacing works fine. I don't run the pierced steel covers.

I fitted them during a period of dyno tuning. With these elements as the only change I picked up a 6% rise in power at the back wheels.

I have also recently installed K&N filters in my TF, by splitting a wide cartridge with my angle grinder and sealing the edges with Plasti-dip, as previously shown by a fellow MG nut on this BBS. (I could not find the thread in the archives now)

I have not dynoed the car, but it felt like there was more more get-up-and-go in that mighty 1466 cc. Imperial power station up front.....?

TF's dont have air filters, just screens to keep the rocks out.
Bolt removal....I loosened the stabilizer bar and rocked the engine to the left fror access.
