MG TD TF 1500 - Oil leak resolver?

I talked to several MG people about the things I want to/have to fix before a new season. Among these is the fact that the engine leaks oil, a little to much.
Then another mg td owner told me about a product that might solve this problem without having to take the engine out. It is called Omega 917 and is added to the oil. It will not change the oil at all, but it will "repair" all the gaskets, and thus stop most of the oil leaking. I have not found anything about on the net in English, here is a link to the Norwegian company importing it:
http://www.norskindustriolje.no/omega_produktguide-1209.aspx
Does anybody here know about it?
By the way, my friend with the TD says he has almost no leaking anymore. Sounds like magic.

I have not heard of this product (and can't read Norwegian), but most products like this are only a temporary fix, and usually cause more problems than they repair...
I feel your pain, since my oil leaks have led me to a complete frame-off, which I never intended....
If you try the product, please report on results.

I read the product information. Sounds like snake oil to me. Primary area for use is hydraulic systems, not engines. Probably something that will make rubber swell, and with no effects on cork or paper gaskets etc.

Oil is cheap, engine rebuilds are not. I have heard your engine run Raymond, and it is such a sweet running XPAG. What if the stuff really works, but seals both gaskets and con rod bearing oil passages? Like saturated fatty acids and cholesterol. Might give you a TD with coronary heart disease.

Doctors advice, that is..

Jan, det er ikke hvem som helst som er fornøyd med produktet, det er Roy Råge.
Raymond Wardenaer

Ok. Og hvor mange kilometer siden?

I am not sure about that, but I had a very long talk with a nice person in the company who sells the Omega products. He stressed that this specific lubricant does not change the characteristics of the oil itself.
The international technical representative for classic MGs in Norway, Mr. Bjoern Rygh, also found this product useful.
The company representative also told me that many owners of old cars changed oil before winter storing, and added this fluid to work during the storage period.

The problem I see with anything to rejuvenate the gaskets & seals is that on the TD, on the rear main bearing at least, there is no gasket or seal to rejuvenate!* It's all about mechanical tolerances and no oil additive will change that.

(*Unless someone install a rear seal conversion kit....)
Rob Edwards

with my 30+ years as a mechanic i would not spend the money. i have never seen one of these products work as advertised and as rob says, if you have the original rear seal..this is mechanical and this goop won't help. regards, tom

I called the Omega 917 people,,, The sales rep said that every thing in their advertising is true!! After our talk about the Omega 917, the sales rep stated that if I could get a few people interested, they have a good deal on a bridge some where in New York that we could purchase!!!

IMHO:
Amazing the number of products in auto parts stores today making claims to "fix" just about anything.

One could spend half a day reading the lables and the other half with a funnel, the next morning you should be good for the next 200,000 miles and never had to touch a wrench. (according to the "claims"!)

I have "tried" very few of them. "Sea-Foam" is one of the few I have tried and only in something I was pretty sure was not going to be around much longer.
I would never put it in the MG.
David Sheward

David,
Don't forget that each product also claims increased mileage, and at least 10% or possible more extra horsepower !!!!

The MG guru here in Norway told me something more that I found interesting. Almost unbelievable. He talked about all the stuff you can put in your cooler to seal of leaks in the radiator. He said many of them did not help at all, while others would even stop the water from running where it should run.
He had, through experience, learned that there is something you can put in the cooler that would stop the leak and doing no harm.
Hold tight now.
Cinnamon!
Powdered cinnamon bought in a food store.
I guess you will not believe this, either. This guy has more than 50 years of experience...
Raymond Wardenaer

Raymond,
Have actuallly done the "cinnamon trick" and it worked!
Got me home (500 miles) in my 56 Dodge years ago.
(In a car that should never have been driven 50 miles from home! LOL)
I learned about it from an older gentleman running a small general store in PA ...where I broke down / blew up.

Didn't mean to imply "no-way / won't work" ...I would be very interested in hearing what happens, but I wouldn't want to be the "test-case".

Keep us posted!

Steve,
Interesting concept ...If I drained all the "fluids" out of my old Dakota and re-filled with "one-of each" from the local Nappa ....hmmm 700hp and never have to buy gas again! Might be an interesting "end" for the old girl! Got to be a "gray man in a thin suit" out there somewhere that would die to take on the legal issuse raissed! LOL
David Sheward

David, there you go :-)
Raymond Wardenaer

Raymond,
Indeed!
The big diferance (far as I anm concerned) ...My 56 Dodge Royal :
Purchase price $25.00 The FIRST time. I actually sold that car 4 times ($20.00 ea.) and each "new owner" gave it back to me. So I had a total "investment" of -$55.00. Nobody could "kill" it ...believe me...we tried! The 5th time I gave it to a friend living at my house. He took the wheels apart to put brakes on it (something it "had-not" for at least 2 years) Sat in the back yard all winter and "siezed". Last seen, a friend and I wenched it onto his rollback, started it and he wedged a 2x4 on the gas pedal. It was screamming bloody murder going down the road on the truck. Al told me it ran out of gas on the way to scrap. Somewhere there is a crushed block of "green-royal" that I am convinced if you could find the battery terminals ...it would still start & run!
It will need a muffler & brakes ...but I'm sure it will still run.

Raymond, Here in the states, a lot of old timers used black pepper, never heard of the cinnamon trick. Supposedly it found it's way in to the leak and plugged it. Did it work? True or false, I have no idea, but it seems like quite a few believed it a few years back. Cars today run on much higher pressures than they did years ago, some no pressure at all. Some of the, "old wives tales", do work, I just don't know which ones. (Grin). PJ

David, nice story!
Raymond Wardenaer

Raymond,
Hadn't thought about that one for a long tyme! You sparked some fond memories for me.
I drove that beast to school daily my senior year with no brakes...smashed it into a pole every morning to stop it. By the end of the year the pole was "listing" about 15 degrees.
I'm lucky to be alive.
David Sheward

The car or the pole? I drove around with my dads 66 Chevy pickup and no brakes. Used the emergency brake which was a pia as it was the old wratchet handle under the dash I've heard of the pepper trick but not the cinnamon.

I have used "Barr's Stop Leak" in domestic radiators with good results, but would not use it in the TD, since there are some very small orifices in the block, that might clog....
Have also used Sea Foam in domestic vehicles with good results, but , again, wouldn't use it in this 54HP XPAG.
I definitely would not use anything that might clog the oil passages.....
Again, I also would love to hear of someone on this forum that had the "vegetables" to use it, and post the results.
Maybe the company would be willing to supply a test XPAG to sacrifice.

Raw egg is the radiator trick that I learned when I was a lot younger. Separate the white from the yolk an put it in the radiator. The yolk will congeal in the leak.
It will get you home Pepper works also.

As for the additives. Some years back I purchased a number of devices that claimed to improve my gas mileage One claimed 20% improvement, One 35% and one 60%. Well the darn things worked so well, I kept having gas pour out of my tank. I was so afraid of fire that I took them all off.
