MG TD TF 1500 - On This Date

On this date Nov. 7th, 1950, TD4224 was the 10th car "out the door",[85 after Bruce Cunha's TD4139]. When I look at it now, it is hard to believe it is 60 years old and running as well as it does. In June of next year, it will be 60 years since I took it off the showroom floor. I have often wondered what happened to it during those 7 months. It would be wonderful to have had some type of record of the events and experiences I've had in this little car over those years, and would make for interesting reading to-day. It has been a blast over these years. Now, on to the next 40 years.

Well done George.... when I have had mine 60 years, I will be 117 years old.....

George ,I envy you the years you have had with 4224. My wife and I were just talking tonight about how much we love the little car and we have only had five years of memories. Gordon , I will only be 109 when I've had mine 60yrs , I'll help you get yours started and we'll go for a drive! Cheers, Keith

I've owned TF 4592 56 years. I hope it doesn't feel as old as I sometimes do.

How can the 10th TD "out the door" have such a high chassis nbr? I went to visit a friend in the next village today, and one of his 5 TDs is a 1950 with chassis 4376 - just seems very high.

I would expect that if you were to check the date that 4376 came "out the door", it would also be in Nov. 1950. By the numbers, it would be the 152nd car "out the door" after mine. The sequence seems logical Gordon. I don't understand the "high chassis number" comment.

Little T (TD3983) is titled as a 1951 but came off the assembly line in October 1950 so I would think 4224 would be about right for November.

Congrats George. The fact that you bought the car new is also very impressive. I hate to say it, but I was not born for two more years after mine came off the line.

So it looks like, if they worked a 5 day week, they were producing about 17 or so a day.

Bruce Cunha

Thank you Bruce. I still remember the first time I dropped my butt into the seat, and just knew it was the right thing for me. It still feels that way.

I have gone through the list and found the following. The first car produced on Nov. 7th was 4215. the last car produced on Nov. 7th was 4245. The numbers are continuous which results in 31 mg tds coming off the line on that date.

Like many other TDs, although mine was produced in 1950, I did not buy it until June 1951 and it was registered as a 1951.

I had heard the number 44 a day...but thought that a tad high...or maybe that was a record?

Richard,

Booby (TD3966) came off the line October 23 1950, yours one day later!

My TD #3376 was built on September 19, 1950 and from all evidence when rebuilding it had had a very hard life. In retrospect it was not really a car that I should have rebuilt but after 5 years of work and a lot of new parts it is back in the same condition it left the factory in. I have driven the car for the last 6 years and put a lot of miles on with this last summer being the best it has ever run.

The TD is just over a year and a half younger than me but certainly looks a lot better.

Now if I can just find the time between keeping the TD and my BGT in good running condition, I will start work on the low mile TF that I bought 5 years ago.

Jasper, thanks for the info! So far your Booby is the closest relative I have found to Little T.

Brian, I know exactly what you mean. Sometime in Little T's past his original Autumn Red was covered over with a very poor black paint job, the red seats covered in black, the door panels removed and replaced with fiberboard with mahogany glued on, the tach was removed and a new mahogany dash made minus the tach and glovebox and the original canvas top was replaced with a white vinyl top.

The engine had thrown a rod and a PO had welded up the oil pan and the ring gear in the rear-end had apparently self destructed and the rebuilder only replaced the ring-gear leaving a non-matching set and SAE bolts had been used to bolt the halves back together stripping threads as they went. The original front girling shocks were replaced with Armstrong, the 9 pin voltage regulator was replaced with a 5 and the original ignition switch was replaced. LOL and this all happened before 1970.

I probably should not have restoared him either but figuring out where all the parts go has been part of the adventure and hopefully in a couple more years 3983 will be back on the road better than new.

Interesting to see how many cars made in the last few months of 1950 are still with us. My TD was painted with what appeared to be spray paint when I first got it. Original color was sun bronze.
