MG TD TF 1500 - Paint Color

I've spent a bit of time trying to figure out which color red my 1955 TF 1500; HDC 46 /9867; build date March 11, 1955 is. Looked at the great MG-UK site but the colors are not very accurate and I cannot match either sample of the two reds shown. I thought I'd throw a couple of pictures out and see if anyone could DEFINITVELY say this is "MG Red" or "Autumn Red". My inclination is to say it is Autumn Red because is appears darker (more maroon) than the MG Red. Also, does anyone have a current list of paint colors for the spectrum of different colors on the TF's? Thanks, Keith

K. G. Meyer

I would call it MG Red. My original Autumn Red was darker but it could just be my screen.

This is what came on my 55. MG Red! Allow for digital photo! Might be a shade off one way or another. PJ

I would also go with MG Red.
28 years ago I had purchased a can of red, called MADDER Red. I think, at the time that was what Moss recommended. It was Ditzler Delstar 71993. When I started painting this time I gave my painter a copy of the formulas on Chris' site. One if them was current. I dont know which, just print them all out.

My painter gave me a small can to cover up bolt heads and bobo's It also said MADDER red.

I attach an old pix (2 years old). Showing the same area as in your pix. I am much further at this time but the attachment gives a good idea of the color.

I also have a can of Autumn Red from the same 28 year old time frame. It is much darker and more like a Mahogany.

This was discussed at length last year, check out the archives.

Hi Keith,

Rod is correct there is an extensive thread discussing the body color "red" TF's in the archives. Try searching Autumn Red, MG Red and I'm sure you will get a lot of hits.

You can also check out a red TF close to when your car was built here -- http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/mgtf/Pictures/TF9052/Thumbnails/mgtf_tf9052.htm

Keith;

your pic shows exax´ctly the same colour as on my october 54 TF.
Car looks great with maroon interior.

Find the thread in the archive. Chris, remember some of those formulas are over 25 years old. I recall some of the toxic pigments have been replaced, and the replacements are not the same. George

George: Most of the formulas I did recent research on and are current. But everyone is well advised to buy a small portion of paint first as a trial. And even better is to find a car that was recently painted that they like the look of and buy the same paint.
