MG TD TF 1500 - Paint Defender

Thought I would pass on this new product.

3M has released a new spray on clear plastic film for protecting a car from rock chips and road debris.

Paint defender http://3mauto.com/paint-defender-spray-film.html is a thin, clear film that you spray on and can remove without damaging the paint.

Product runs $25 a can or $44 for a kit with a spray handle and the plastic and tape to tape off the area to spray.

My B is in the shop getting road chips on the rockers taken care of. I plan to use this on those areas and also on the nose of the hood and around the headlights.

For those with paint jobs that they want to protect, this may be something to look into.

bruce,
I would be interested to hear how this product works after the year,,, If you have a paint job that is waxed frequently, how would it look with the leading part (nose) of the bonnet covered by a clear spray, and the rest of the bonnet having the advantage of being waxed more frequently?? I would think that there might be a color difference?

Company's always claim that their product is the best thing that ever hit the market. Detroit used the stuff years ago under a different name of course and discontinued using it in mass quantities. It will eventually go the way of the plastic headlight lenses by turning a little hazy. Don't believe you can just peel it off without damaging the paint, once cured, it usually has to be ground off clear to the metal to make a base for a repaint job. There's no way I'd put it on any of my cars. Clear coat is the only thing I'd use, but being truthful, I don't even use it on my classics. PJ

I keep you informed on this one. I am going to use it on the fender rockers on the B. Tired of having them repainted every few years from rock chips.

Paul. I normally would agree, but I have not known 3M for making too many poor products. I use a lot of their adhesives and other automotive products and have found them very goo.

Point on what happens with sunlight on the plastic coated are VS the non coated paint is one that may be a concern. But as I am using it for the rockers, probably not an issue. If this works as described, I may use it on other areas to see.
