MG TD TF 1500 - Paint - Purolator Oil Filter Canister

Anyone know of a near correct color of spray-can paint for a TF Purolator oil filter canister? Source? Brand? Color name? Product number? Needs to hold up against oil and heat.

I can shoot with a paint gun, but prefer a rattle can if less expensive.

It's for the canister on my 1955 TF-1500.

Thanks,

Lonnie I among others here used Honda Sable Green Metallic. It's as near as damn it to the original. See Pic. The Purolator decal is from Rob Grantham in WA (on the west coast of Oz). Surprisingly inexpensive & excellent quality. Cheers

Thanks for the fast responses. I had seen your earlier posts and photos in the archives.

Chris, I could not find Dupont 43094L.

Seems that Honda Sable Green (Honda code BG-12M) was only used on 1981 & 1982 Honda Civics. It is base-coat / clear-coat.

Honda BG-12M base-coat + clear-coat is available on the web for about $50 for a few ounces in cans or spray cans.

Any suggestions for a lower cost off-the-shelf metallic silver-green that will be near the color and stand up to oil and heat? If not, then I guess that I'll bite the bullet and order Honda paint.

Austin Healey green engine paint from Moss is what I used.

Thanks Frank,

I had seen your archived posts about AH engine paint, Moss #220-550. Good option at less than $25.

Nice "rakish" angle on the decal to match the original one in the earlier photo.

My 55 has a Tecalemit filter on it. Did Abington use either one or what ever was laying in the bin? Kinda odd they would use two different makes. I was fortunate enough to find one with a near perfect tag on it. I still haven't heard for sure what the original color was. If it was painted when the engine was painted, then they would have to of taken time to mask the metal id plate which is riveted on. It wouldn't seem they would have taken the time to do so. ?? The Tecalemit filters were painted a metalic bronze color, with a rivited on tag.

PJ,

Go here and scroll 1/3 of the way down to see a picture. It looks repainted but I've seen original ones metallic bronze color as Dave mentioned. There is a picture of the original somewhere in the archives or in Chris Couper's Original MG TD TF websites.

Thanks Frank, nice photo, but difficult to get the right color from it with the variable lighting. Had an LHS Chrysler that was painted a light gun metal and the filter looks a lot like that color. Looks more silverish than gold, but different computers show colors differently. PJ

Well, that's very interesting.
My TD (19435) has covered just a few Miles ahead of 30000 since new and has still the original colour on the engine and the filter housing, although it looks different from what others posted...

Ralph: MG varied back and forth with Tecalemit and Purolator for the TD canister elements depending on supply and contracts etc.

Your is as original too.

Lonnie I was able to get the HSG in engine enamel. It's a good match to Matthew's original. Paint suppliers here in Oz match the paint to whatever colour you require while you wait. Cost is $36/can with enough paint to give 3 canisters a couple of coats. (I shared mine around). You should be able to do the same thing in Florida. No rakish angle on my decal though cause I reckon they were just being slack that day .. Cheers

Another original Tecalemit about the same as Ralph's.

The pigment in the paints used on these oil filters was, like most of the paint on these cars, quite unstable. The color changed considerabley with the exposure to oil, grime, heat, etc.
