MG TD TF 1500 - Paint question

We're doing a ground up restoration on a '54 TF and are trying to find an enamel code no. for the birch gray color. PPG has a code no. (31918) in laquer but we would like to do the car in enamel. The alpha code prefix to the model(?)no. is HDB (HDB464697) which, I am told, indicates the paint designation. Does anyone have a sugestion? Jerry H.

H = MG midget
D= 2 SEATER
B= LIGHT GREY
4= NORTH AMERICA
6= CELLULOSE BODY/SYNTHETIC WINGS
/4697

I would think with the laquer code, that any paint supplier could make up the enamel?

I'm new here - but you could look at this site:

http://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgtd/mgtd_finishes.htm

It gives you a whole bunch of original codes referring to different manufacturers. My TD is undergoing a respray right now and with these codes the guys who are doing the respray were able to get the right colour from Sikkens.

My appologies - I was thinking of the TD; here are the same details for the TF:

Here is another site that will sell you PPG enamel and one or two coat urethanes, etc. referenced to your original formula. Most people have a small amount mixed and try it first to please the eye. Even during the period, there were variations. I didn't see the formulas given here, but as Gordon said, most paint shops can covert- still wise to see it before painting.

Jerry,

Is that the late Jerry Strand car?

I show the following codes for Birch Gray

BMC GR3
PPG 31918 (or 32714)
R-M BM002

Certainly PPG in Bloomington seems willing to mix most colors in many different systems. Just ask. Otherwise, have them spray a sample and have them scan it.

Cheers,
