MG TD TF 1500 - Radiator temp gauge fitting

I'm starting to acquire needed items for a very tattered MG D Type. The radiator on this car has no fitting for the temp gauge bulb to screw in to the radiator. Does any one out there have a scrap radiator that they could cut out the needed piece. Then my radiator shop guy can braze it on the original radiator.

Thanks
Gary

If you mean a TD, or a TF the radiators on both cars are NOT fitted with any temp. sending bulb. The sending bulb on the TF is is fitted to the water outlet on the head. Most TD owners use a MotoMeter.

Gary,
I can't help you with he fitting, but we did have a beautiful "D" Type at the NEMGT Register G.O.F. on Mystic in 2010,,, I believe it was local to Ct.... first one I ever saw up close,,,,

Both of the TD I have do have a fitting brazed in the top rear of the radiator. I need that fitting. Moss sells an adapter that screws in to the fitting to except the Temp bulb.

Steve
There are only a hand full of D Type in the USA. There are only 61 servers in the World.

There are a couple different adaptors for the gauge to rad tank- some male/male, others female/male. if you can get the right one for your gauge, then find a nut that threads on and have that brazed on to the tank. Someone on the board just made some headlamp stem nuts- maybe they could machine what you need. If someone on the board knows the thread size/pitch for the adapter that would be helpful also. George

Gary,
Would a "TD" radiator match that "D" radiator with the temp. fitting?

Is your radiator in rough shape to match the car condition?

Why I ask is we have 3 TD radiators in great shape, and I want to recore one for better cooling on supercharged "ToyD"... hate to recore a nice one while someone's MG has a rough one.

If you or anyone out there comes up with the two shipping, I swap, as long as your tank top & bottom are undamaged.

I have to pass this by the members of the MI Chapter for first dibs, though.

The D radiator is a lot smaller then the TD. The D was made in 1931 & 1932. My radiator is in usable shape. The core is also different. All I need is the Fitting off of a scrap TD radiator. Then I can install the temp gauge. If I can not find one I will make one as George suggested

Thanks for the offer

My offer for radiator swap has been snapped up by a local member. I can meet him at a meeting so there's no shipping, too.

Sorry!

gl krukoski. I would check with a good plumbing supply company for a brass fitting that could be brazed into the radiator. You many also need an adapter to connect the bulb of the mechanical gauge to the brass fitting. The photo attached shows such an adapter (black in color) I used to install a mechanical temperature gauge on my Morris Minor. I got the adapter from a Mini parts vendor at the Portland (OR) British Field Meet.

Gary, to add to John's suggestion, you may also try taking the adapter to a good auto parts store with a selection of brass fittings. Very likely something will fit. George

GL, I've been hoping for a picture of your D Type. Is this what it looks like (or is going to look like)?

I attempted to attach an image but I may have failed. I'll try again -

Yes that is a D Type in your photo. I do not have any full view photos at this time. Here is a shot of the car in the trailer.

And another use for duct tape! Bud

Gary,
If your not trying for a 100% car you can do something like what I did in my TD. I wanted to read the water temperature in the engine not the radiator. There is a big difference before the thermostat opens. I plugged the radiator fitting and drilled and tapped the casting below the thermostat. I just used a thread sealant and it has been trouble free for 2 years.

Hi Gary,

You're right. Only 250 D-Types were produced - actually the 4-seater version of the J-Type.

You're on the wrong BB. Suggest you ask the same question on the Triple M forum. See http://www.triple-mregister.org/. But be prepared to be asked for your chassis nbr.

I have a current list of all known owners of D-Types and didn't see your name, but that doesn't mean you don't have one. There are 8 D-Types registered in the US. Not uncommon for cars to change hands w/o advising the register.

We have a D-Type in The Montréal MG Car Club, and I expect to see the owner next week-end. If you want to contact him, let me know and I'll pass on your coordinares.

However in St. Croix Beach (MN), you have a big-time Triple M collector. Let me know if you want his coordinates.

For the record, the D-Type is rare because of the low production, so irrespective of whet you're starting with, stick with it. Have a look at the pix of some of the owners - http://www.triple-mregister.org/pictures_members2.asp. Triple M cars are starting to rise (in value) as there are so few left hiding in barns (like my PA). Well worth doing a good restoration, and almost everything is still available, and much of it new, albeit usually quite dear!

Gary, I found an old adapter. If you still need the nut/fitting, I can take it to the parts store nearby next week and try to find a brass fitting it will screw into. George

Hi Gordon
This is my second MMM car. I completed a 1933 J2 three years ago. The D was acquired about six weeks ago. Both the North American and UK groups know about the change in ownership. I'm acquainted with the MMM Forum in the UK and the D group.
Lew who is the Registrar for the MMM North America is a good friend of mine. Yes I would like to get in touch with your member with the D Type.
The main reason I was asking for the fitting on this site was the larger availability of scraped radiators from T Type. MMM radiators are extremely hard to find.

George
That would be great.

Doesn't look like you need my help. Your J2 looks great. Congratulations! My PA is a long way from getting to your J2 stage!

I will be seeing the owner of D0342 in a week. and will make sure he contacts you.

I have a spare PA rad shell, but I don't believe that will help you.

Have you seen this listing on eBay under MG/other as a 1930 MG m-type/midget? I have nothing to do with the seller, just found it interesting. John
