MG TD TF 1500 - Relined Brake Shoes TD/TF

Does anyone know where we can get TD/TF brake shoes relined at a reasonable price? Moss sells the lining kits for the same price as relined shoes! I see no sense in throwing away used shoes to buy relined shoes. The shoes for other British cars in our class cost far less, even from Moss.

Most 'old' brake shops can rivet the two together...used to be done all the time....

Why would you opt to reline shoes over purchasing new? Are suppliers selling shoes of poor quality that you would want to stay away from?

I put Moss ones on two years ago and seem fine....probably cheaper to reline?

First, Check the phone book in your area for brake & clutch, service, rebuilding, some are found under truck parts.
Moss prices on T series brakes, & hardware are "from the phone book" ( yeah the # sounds good!)
Also try TSI or Ted Schumacher Inc., mid west, Ohio?
Try Porterfield does race applications, perhaps street also. http://www.porterfield-brakes.com
Pittsburgh Bonded shoe in Pittsburgh PA USA 412 421-8400 in spite

Jim,Vince,
I'm sure you can find a local place to do it a lot less expensive than the MG supply houses...and when you get them back, you know they will fit.,

i think this is a good owner accomplished job. i think you should reline. regards, tom

A lining and rivet set from Abingdon Spares is about $25 less that from Moss. I just helped reline shoes on a nearby TC. The owner purchased an inexpensive kit made to punch the rivets out, and then replace which was made for a Model A I think. It was a c-shaped gadget that you clamped in the bench vice, really slick. The local Utitlity Trailer dealer will reline the shoes if you supply the linings, but you have to tell them they are from a trailer, not a car. Gerge

I used C.H. Toppng & Co. in California to reline my mg td brake shoes:

The cost was $30 to reline four shoes, plus $12.80 for shipping. This was a few years ago.

As stated above, any local shop should be able to reline them for you. I used to use one over in New Orleans to do mine...they would bond the lining to all 8 shoes for about half the price of the Moss or Abingdon kits. It's not rocket science.

Thanks for all the input guys. I will begin to investigate tomorrow. It just rubbed me the wrong way when I saw other small British car brake linings offered at a fair price compared to the inflated prices for our T series cars.
Vince, FYI the shoes normally dont wear out unless something extraordinary happened to them. Just the lining wears and they are simple to replace with a set of new linings.
Jim Merz

Well I wish I would have decided earlier not to buy new but I just did on ebay. I will however pursue another set via the re-lining method. I have several crappy sets that could use re-lining.

The cool thing about going to a specialist house (I, like many others here used Brake and Equipment Warehouse in Minneapolis) is that you can have each lining 'Arched' for the drum they will be in. Pretty cool knowing the radii matches exactly. My TD stops like an arrow. Straight and true.

Don't mean to speak for Bud Krueger, but he an I had a company outside Cleveland reline our shoes with "Kevlar" for about half price of "new shoes" from Moss. Considering the milegae and speed out cars go these should be yhe last shoes these cars ever need. Maybe Bud remembers the address, i can't seem to find it right now
