MG TD TF 1500 - Remove TD Pinion Flange

I bought a used rack and pinion to change out the one on my 52 mg td. I removed the nut and the round washer-type piece beneath it from the pinion flange but I can't get the flange off. Is a harmonic balancer puller what I need to remove the flange and, if so, can you tell me where I can find one? Is there an alternate method? Thanks.

Good morning. Usually, the pinion flange will come off with just a couple light taps with a hammer. I have had a couple where the water had gotten in between the pinion flange and pinion and rusted the two together. the couple that stuck I had to heat with a torch and use a gear puller. The flange is made of a relatively soft metal and deformed while being pulled off. That wasn't a problem since it wasn't going to be used again since I was changing the ring and pinion to a 4.3 set and that uses a d different spline on the pinion and flange. I've done over 95 ring and pinion changes, so if you have any other questions give me a call.

F.W. I believe you are refering to the pinion flange of your rack and pinion steering assembly. This flange can usually be removed with a small 3-legged puller when still on the car, although clearances can stil be a problem and the puller's shaft tends to wander on the head of the pinion shaft as there is no dimple to keep it centered. I assume however that your rack and pinion is out of the car, as you mentioned that it is a spare unit. This should make things a lot easier. You could probably remove the flange by holding it between the jaws of a vice and tapping on the head of the pinion with a brass punch, being careful not to mushroom the threaded end. You might want to leave the pinion nut loose on the shaft to protect the threads until the flange breaks loose. You can get it off for sure with a puller, if you wish buy or borrow one. Hope this helps Cheers Phil

A friend from work is going to bring in a puller tomorrow, thanks for your help!
