MG TD TF 1500 - replace gas cap gasket

51/52 MG TD 7191, need to replsce the gasket found under the gas cap. we have just completed a frame up restoration. I noticed a slight gasolene odor around the cap. opened the cap, and looked closely at the gasket, looks to be the very old and dry orginal, with at least one coat of paint. does anyone have a technique for removing the old gasket without dropping bits of debris into the tank. removing the tank would be the last resort. a note to anyone involved in a T'type restoration, note this issue, and replace the gasket while the tank can be upside down.

I stuff a cloth tightly down the tank neck, dig out the old cork gasket, install a new one, and pull out the cloth with the bits in the folds. The cork gaskets are a bit fiddly, and I sometimes soak them in oil to make them a bit less fragile. I always have a handful on hand, because they DO break!

Why don't I ever worry about this stuff? Like Tom, I soak the gasket in oil before installing, but I guarantee that there will be more debris of other nature in the tank than a few pieces of cork floating around from removing the old gasket (maybe not now, but someday).

There is also a screen at the inlet, a screen on the fuel pump, and a screen on each carburetor bowl. If the cork gets that far, you only need to remove the lid to the bowl and flush out the needle.

Since I replaced the gasket during the restoration, Tommy rarely spills fuel down the front of the tank as I drive, so it is an effective repair.

Warmly,
dave

Have your shop vac running and put the nozzle over the filler as you pull out the old gasket. Any stray pieces should be sucked up.

Jim, I would be extremely careful about using an electrical shop vac near the fuel tank filler. Fumes can be sucked in and if exposed to the motor inside the vac result in an explosion hazard. I think the rag in the filler neck method is safer.

John - I actually saw that heppen once in a shop in the Bronx - a VERY rough-and-tumble shop. They were vacuuming the cork debris out when all of a sudden there was a loud POP and the motor of the shopvac almost at once burst into flames. No fire extinguisher or water, so they just pulled it out to the street by the hose and let it burn. Only in New York...
