MG TD TF 1500 - Sending unit terminal leak

In '99, I repaired a brand new, leaking sending unit (leaked out the teminal stud) with allegedly gasoline- proof o-rings. They have now turned to mush, and it is leaking again. (I have read all archive threads I could find.) Any suggestions for what type of washer/gasket/seal for the terminal stud? The back plate and tank to unit gaskets (cork installed with Permatex aviation sealant) have been dry as a bone. Thanks!

George - You could coat the sealing surfaces and the screw threads where they pass through the spacer with Permatex 97B. I find that this product works well against gasoline (I use it to seal the threads on the inlet and outlet threads on fuel pumps). The one draw back is that this is a hardning type sealer and pretty well glues everything together, so in that respect it will make disassembly and clean up more difficult, though not impossible. Good luck - Dave

George, I used cork gaskets that I cut out of very thin cork and then smeared both sides with Permatex, then placed on both sides of the stud...no leaks now for last 5 years.

George......ten to one you have had the same problems I recentley encountered with my fuel pumps gaskets turning to mush.
You probably have some fuel with a high concentration of the additive that is in the so called reformulated gasoline. This stuff eats up synthetic gaskets and rubber. I got a tank of it and then had fuel pump and carb leaks until I drained it out.
I am awaiting some data for an article I am writing on the subject.

George:
If O ring material is the problem, you might try Viton.
I have had the same set of viton O rings in my carbs as gland seals for 13 years, and they aren't leaking yet.
Cheers!

Thanks for the tips. Since last post, I found and today received from Abingdon Sparestheir new sending unit gasket set made of stiff greenish cardboard, which includes a tiny washer for the stud. #s are 19/157H for the kit, and 19/157G for the stud seal. I will report back how they work, and if not will one of the above.
