MG TD TF 1500 - Shelby TC

Just for info, the Carroll Shelby '49 MG TC sold at Barrett-Jackson in Las Vegas yesterday for $285,000. Speed Channel carried all 3 days live. Unfortuantely, for me at least, I can only watch so many '60's and '70's American muscle cars sell for rediculous prices before I become ill :-)

God - if all the T cars were bringing that kind of $$$ - we would all be set.

I set the DVR to record, then fast forward through 98% of it. I only stop for cars that interest me.

Jeff:
We would only be set if we sold our cars . . . then the "we" would become "them"! . . . :-)

Precisely. If my TC was suddenly worth $285K, I still wouldn't sell it. I can't imagine never having one again.

It sure would make paying the Moss/Abingdon Spares bills a little easier - knowing that kind of sum was out there somewhere!

I guess we don't have to worry about that though. I believe T Series prices will actually decline as the cars change hands over the next 10 years. My thinking is that most antique enthusiasts are drawn to other models.

I will be happy with my TF, MGA, and MGB.

Hope to one day have a TC!

Jeff
Jeff

Well Jeff, according to your theory, you only have to wait 10 years for a TC!

The TC was nice enough, but most of the members cars are much nicer. We just need Shellby's name on the door panel. Quite an event. I'd recomend a trip to one just for the sites. One thing though, find a person who's selling or buying and have them get you a visitor pass. We got to walk around hundreds of people standing in line. It was great. We also got to go on the bidders floor which you can't do with a ticket. Can't get on stage unless you have an actual bidders pass. For those of you that recorded Thursday's sale. I'm the joker with the camera shooting pictures of the Daytona Recreation # 188 while it was on the block. I won the pool we had for what it would bring. I guessed $ 42,000 and she sold for $ 41,000. I was going to bid on the Sprite but it went for $ 18,000 and it wasn't that great. Out of my league. Some real bargins happen in the mornings. Some nice Mercedes and Rolls sold cheap. I think the steal of the auction was the 61 Jag.

We all know that the price had nothing to do with the fact it was a TC. Any car that Shelby raced, especially if it was his first race, would bring those numbers or more. I sure wouldn't be valuating my T-Series based on that sales price :-)

With all due respect, did you guys buy a TD because it was cheaper than what you really wanted, or because you actually wanted a TD? I bought my TC because I dreamed of owning one ever since the first time I saw one. If I were rich, I'd add an Alfa 8C to my 300 car garage next to my personal test track. Unfortunately I'm not rich so that isn't likely to happen, but even if I had all the money in the world I'd still own a TC.

If all TCs were worth $200K+, there is still no way I'd sell it. I don't care so much about money as I do enjoying quality of life. Forget stress and spending all your time trying to get rich. If I can pay the bills, drive my M.G.s and keep my wife as happy as I want to be, then I consider myself as rich as a man can get.

Give up something I've always dreamed about so I can have more money for a while? No thanks! I'd regret it for the rest of my life. Besides. $200K doesn't go all that far anymore!
Steve Simmons

Didn't mean to bruise your sensibilities Steve- if the TC is a family inheritance or something, you might attach that much value? At the end of the day our little cars were just inexpensive and crudely built little machines. They are still fairly plentiful.

With $285K you could replace the TC with a very nice one for $35K, and still have a quarter million left- which still goes pretty far in my part of the country.

The only problem is $285K will put you in Obama's 70% tax bracket ;^)

D C Congleton

I'm sure the buyer won't enjoy the car as much as Steve does. Why pay so much, it is even missing panels ;-).

Dallas, if all TC's where 285K, you wouldn't be able to buy an nice one for 35K?

Jeff, I think (and hope) you are right about falling prices and would like to have the lowpoint in a year or seven, please. By then the children will drive their own (or my) MG's and the TC will surely join the stable with the YA and MGB.

BTW, here in Holland there's a TA for sale with a blown TD2 XPAG, red with red bucket seats. I wish I had a spare 30.000 euro's somewhere; it would be mine tomorrow!
Willem van der Veer

Dallas, I think you misunderstood my point! What I'm saying is that if ALL our T-cars were suddenly worth that much then I wouldn't sell mine, because once the money was gone, I couldn't buy another one! If ONLY my personal TC was worth that kind of money so that I could buy an even better one for $40K then yes, I would probably sell it. Not definitely, but probably. My wife and I have a lot of good memories with this car which are worth more to me than money. Since no one is going to offer me $285K, I guess we'll never find out. Of course if anyone wants to make that offer, I'm all ears!

People sometimes don't believe me when I say my cars aren't for sale at any price. They usually respond with "OK, how about ten million dollars?" I then ask them to show me the money. My message to them is that my cars aren't for sale at any price that someone would actually offer. No one would ever offer ten million dollars for any M.G, so I stand firm in my statement! :)
Steve Simmons

Steve, I know where you are coming from on 'not for sale at any price.' The TD will be the last piece of hardware I will part with when I'm moved to a nursing home. Oh, I'll still let the boys drive it, but I can't imagine life without it. I've had it that long... not as long as Gord Clark (our original TF owner!) by any means, but long enough to know it is mine until I'm gone.

dave

Actually, at $2,000 dollars in 1953, they were anything but cheap... you could get a good little Ford 4 door for the $1200.00 range? The biggest problem was that you were paying the same for a 'little' sports car, that you could get a 'big' American car for...difficult to get past the 'wife'!!!

Gordon, the US list price $1945 for the MGTD included a bunch of import fees and taxes.
I didn't mean to "dis" any one's pride and joy- I have owned my TD since 1967 as the second owner and spent more than it's worth restoring it.

I have also owned numerous other collector type cars during that period, both British and American. I tend to be realistic and comparative about things mechanical.

I still would sell the TD or my Healey 3000 for $285K in a heartbeat.

Dallas ;^)
D C Congleton

I remember a family discussion back in the '50s and the 4 door sedan won out as it was the same price (....mom: 'well, we just can't afford to have two cars, and the kids just won't fit in that one....) Our British Car ownership didn't happen till my brother bought his first used MGA for $1200
gblawson(gordon)

Jot to tell you that I have been tempted on more thana few occasions to put the TD up for sale. Money it would bring would be a nice addition to my bank account. But every time I start thinking that way, a nice day comes up, or a nice stretch of road, ant the feel of driving the TD drives the thought from my head. The TD was not my first british car, but it was the first one I totally restored myself. it assisted me through a divorce but taking my mind off her and onto it.

I must admit, I drive my MGB a lot more. TD is fun and great, but still lacks some of the creature comforts of the B.

This year, the TD got more use than it has in a lot of years. New engine has broken in well and the car is running great. I have to agree with Gordon, I am hoping I get taken to my nursing home in it.
Bruce-C

Hi all.
re nursing home: instead of being sent to a nursing home I can be moved out in the garage and sit there and look at my TD
dreaming of winding roads and so.
happy td motoring.
Thats better than looking at other senile
olds.
