MG TD TF 1500 - Spare parts for your TD and TF?

I just saw the video of the rear axle change. Just curious what the TD and TF owners try to keep and maybe the "must have" spare parts to keep our cars on the road?

Reading the archives I know about the fuel pumps are probably one item. A quick change and back on the road. I am inquiring to know what you guys have in your garages you have accumulated by going to swap meets or finds on EBay that are nice to have? Is there anything common?

Not that I am in need of anything but the age of these cars and wear and tear, something eventually will give out and it would be nice to have just in case for hard to find parts.

Kind regards, Frank

A spare set of points on the plate is one item almost all the folks in our club carry. I have pertronix in my TD but still carry the spare points and plate as they are easily swapped out. I also carry a spare water pump. An emergency fan belt(about 30 bucks ) is also nice. Of course, I also carry tools to make those emergency repairs.

As with any old car, the list would be endless. I've thought about keeping a pair of half-shafts around. There are some that one gentleman in particular has on ebay from time to time. They are of new manufacture, and are improved in both design and metalurgy. I've never gotten around to buying them though. I like to keep a spare set of oem points, which I have never had to use in the last 10 years. I basically have no spares, except for a rebuilt tranny that I have been meaning to install for about the last 5 years. I do keep a set of spark plugs and an extra oil filter on hand for convenience sake.
What I've found is that these cars, if taken care of, are very reliable. When they were new and not so new, they were cheap and plentiful, so there were many backyard mechanics maintaining them on the cheap. I believe that this soiled their reputation. The cars are now cherished possessions, and are usually well taken care of and garaged. We are also fortunate that there are many new parts that are only a day or two away because of companies such as Moss, Abingdon, etc. Even the fuel pump...when mine gave up the ghost a few years ago, I had a new SU solid state version in 2 days.

I actually don't keep much in the garage. But stashed in various nooks and crannies inside the car itself (patterned after my father's 40+ years of TA ownership)is a fuel pump, points plate, fan belt, 2 quarts of oil, a roll of duct tape, 4 hose clips, full tool roll, and a St. Christopher medal. I've never actually used any of them except the duct tape. And maybe the St. Christopher medal in a dark parking lot one night when it didn't want to start right away. But I've only had the car a year.

I keep a little plastic fishing tackle box, only about 10" wide and 2" high in the sidescreen box. Its compartments are filled with points, rotor, condenser, elec' tape, wire, screws, bolts, hoseclamps and a cork. In the tool box I also have a fan belt, sparkplugs and spare distributor cap. The first owner had a second SU pump fitted on the firewall so I just flick a switch if the rear pump fails.

Cheers,
Matthew.

We always old honey squirt bottle with brake fluid and 13/16" wrench to open master cylinder.

Well, With over 36 years of "saving parts" I now have a number of large blue bins and small clear tubs of parts. I did an inventory of what I have and made an excel spread sheet so I can find what I have.

With all this, I am amazed on how many things I still need to buy. Broke a tach cable a few weeks back. Yep, no spare. So, I sometimes wonder if all those bins are really needed.

As Andy says, "and a roll of duct tape"! Thank goodness for that invention! PJ

"And on the 8th day God createted duck tape and zip-ties to hold the whole freaken mess together....he hadn't heard of JB Weld.
(You may quote me on that)
I carry:
Vintage Lucas trouble liamp, fuel pump, water pump, points, plate, dizzy, & condensor, fan belt, oil, brake fluid, duct tape, zip-ties, Jb weld, hose clamps, full tool roll, assorteded box of screws and bolts, spare bulbs, baling wire and a "free gas card" (siphon hose). St. Christopher is on the front badge bar....also (most important)..an innocent, bewildered look on my face for passers-by and a cell phone...just in case.
Used to carry a half shaft ...but used it one night!

Not bad, Dave, on his day off.

I have always thought that three other essentials should also be included namely, an umbrella, a Triple A membership card and some sandwiches.

St. Christopher, AAA card and a positive attitude. If I prepared for everything else that could go wrong I would need to pull a trailer!
