MG TD TF 1500 - Spark plug connectors

Could be I'm using the wrong terminology, but I am going to change all 4 spark plug caps. One let me down tonight, so I've just wrapped the plug tip with foil and jammed it on 'till I can resolve this issue.

Can anyone suggest a source of good quality plug caps/boots/whatever? I was considering buying a complete wiring kit. As an example see, http://www.amazon.com/NGK-HE33-Wire-Set/dp/B000C5M2BS/ref=sr_1_99?ie=UTF8&qid=1410113012&sr=8-99&keywords=sparkplug+boot, praying its long enough, and cutting to fit (if necessary).

I'm fitting a new pertronix Flamethrower coil at the same time, so I will need wiring that can withstand 30,000 volts.

Gordon,

Jeff at Advance Distributors supplied a very nice set of correct length wires for mine at a very reasonable sum. He actually supplied a later model distributor modified to fit my TF with a tailored advance curve. He should be able to supply wires for the original type distributor.

NGK make nice water tight caps that you could use if your wires are otherwise in good shape. In the attached picture I needed to use their resistor caps to suppress EMI due to the switching voltage regulator and electronic ignition I installed on this bike. The caps are very high quality. The wires are solid core and the caps simply screw into the core.

Sorry for the poor picture but it's the only one I have with me.

Gordon.
Although the blue wires look good I think that you will not be able to cut them to length. The end caps are likely to be fused on and willo not stand cutting as the cores are carbon fibre.
I tried that once without success.
The original copper wired wiring will withstand more then 30000 volts.

Thanks for the info chaps. I did a little more research and find that there are options, and I'm not clear on what will, and what won't work.

If I go to the Bosch page http://www.boschautoparts.com/WireSets/Pages/SparkPlugWireSets.aspx, I see three different kinds of wire. Not sure whether I need - copper or carbon conductor, and what resistance.

Any suggestions?

Gordon, a problem raises its ugly head on this issue. The distributor caps with the screw cap are not designed to retain the carbon conductor cables. They want the wire cores to be splayed through the metal washer and to be sandwiched against the metal insert in the top of the cap. NGK makes a series of spark plug caps that contain resistors. They can be configured with solid core wires. http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/docs/Resistor_Covers.pdf Bud

The picture I attached above shows one of the NGK covers to which Bud refers. You can source good quality bulk (7mm, I think) solid core wire from many online sources by the foot. If you still have the original type cap with screw-in terminals you may re-use them along with new NGK caps and quickly make great new wires.

This issue with wires keeps coming up vis a vis "solid core" wire. I question if "solid core" is the same as "copper braided core" such as Packard 440 wire. I was doing some on line research which suggested that "solid core" is something very old fashioned that no one really uses or can find any more. Copper braided or stranded is what is available and works with our screw in type dizzy caps and plug connectors. As opposed to the graphite core wire used on modern cars.
Is there an expert out there who can clarify this?

Just FWIT: I'm currently running conventional points and condensor using NGK B6HS non-resistor plugs. I plan on converting to the Pertronix lobe-sensing ignitor (II?) 146-LSP (see thread "Ring Too Tall"). There seems to be serious concern regarding the need to surpress EMF by using resistor plugs or caps. I just got off the phone with NGK Tech Support and they recommend the NGK BR6HS as the resistor substitute. I looked at images on Yahoo and it appears that externally the plugs are the same so that the R -plugs should work with my straight clip on plug connectors (see image attached). The wires are Yellow Jacket Silicon 7mm (I assume stranded copper but I've not cut one open to see). I should mention, the TD runs pretty good.

I've just tried to bring up http://www.boschautoparts.com/WireSets/Pages/SparkPlugWireSets.aspx, , but it seems that in the short interval of when I posted it and now, the site has been changed and one now gets a 404 error.

In any event, I don't think plug manufacturers really care about old technology. They are today, more concerned about suppressing spurious emissions that interfere with high-voltage electronic ignition systems, radios, cel-phones, etc.

The Bosch plug wire set offered by Advance Distributor is carbon core (it says so), I'm going to stick with stranded copper. I'll buy the NKG caps with the 5KΩ resistor on Amazon, and hope for the best.

Jud, I'm waiting for contact with my tech support person from Pertronix (he took a long weekend). It would seem that the LU146LS is an IgniterII device. Besides the need for noise suppression, it mounts in a totally different manner than the LU146. It replaces the points. You can not simply carry your old, complete, points plate for a quick replacement. I think the condenser may have to be removed.

My LU146 operates with the magnet collar from an LU142 system to handle the cam profile. I'm not sure what profile the LU146LS is designed around.

Tom, I'm not an expert, but I'm quite certain the term 'solid core' refers to any core created from bare wire, whether solid or stranded, steel, copper or ? Bud

Ditto that solid core means copper, steel, any wire, not a graphite or similar resistor core.
