MG TD TF 1500 - stamping on a XPAG block

I found this stamping on a XPAG block. Does anyone knows what it means ??

Wolsely?

Jose - That stamping stands for Wolseley, who also used the engines in their cars. Cheers - Dave

I am pretty certain it is for Wellworthy who had an iron foundry and also did some of the block castings, but I may be wrong!

Does the ID plate say XPAG or XPAW for Wollesley?

it s an mg td XPAG engine.

The engine tag says XPAG and the engine is from a 1950 MG TD. How a Wosley engine ended up in an MG TD ??
I do not know

Jose,

I have a similar 'W' next to my oil pump. Do you have the MG logo displayed forward and above the oil pump in the side of the block (casting number 24146 and 24445 behind or under the dynamo)? If so, you have an XPAG block. If not, it could still be an XPAG block because later round water hole engines all shared the same block (number 168421) on the Wolseley 4/44, later TD and TF. I believe Ian is correct, it is the caster's mark.

Finally, the Wolseley had the dipstick in a different location. If your's is in the right place, and a second dipstick location is not drilled and plugged, you have an XPAG block.

Somewhere in Neil Carins' book on the XPAG engine (which is at home) explains this in great detail. I recall the earlier TD engines had MG/Octagon cast in that area, but later on they did away with the MG, as the Wolseley and other cars used the same block. I believe the book also says many "Wolseley" blocks/engines (XPAW) were used to replace thrashed XPAG's, the only difference being the dipstick placement and a couple other easily changed things. hope this helps!

I'm relatively certain it's a foundry mark, although I don't know about Wellworthy. I thought they only did smaller pieces? But the block on my dad's Frazer Nash TT Rep has a similar mark on it.
