MG TD TF 1500 - Steering Column Adjustment

My first attempt to do this was appended on another thread so now that I am a new member, I figured I would start a new thread. I just purchased a 1952 TD. Since I am 6'2", I have trouble getting my legs around the steering wheel. I have already adjusted the steering wheel (in and out) to be the optimal distance (actually there is no optimnal distance), and I was wondering if I can adjust the steeering column up and down? I noticed that the steering column clamp underneath the cowling can be adjusted so that the steering column could be moved up closer to the top of clamp. Right now my column is adjusted so that it is at the bottom of the clamp. Can I move the steering column up higher on the clamp so that it rests just underneath the dashboard without impacting the performance of the rack and pinion mechanism?
Mike

Mike, there is a primitive flexible joint in the steering column just above the steering rack, and if the rubbers are in good condition , this should allow you to move the column in its bracket so that it just about touches the dash. Regards, Richard.

Mike,
Do you have the oe steering wheel? If so, try a motolita steering wheel. It is a smaller diameter and should give you some extra leg room. I am a similar size and have no problem with our TD.

Good luck,

Lossening the bottom bolt on the clamp should let you raise it abut 4". On mine the bolt will just about touch the lower edge of the dash... it does slip down again over about a week or so. I'm 6'3" and find the wheel pulled a few inches toward me helps get it off my thighs!

Mike,

This was one of the first jobs I tackled after buying the TD. Previous posts have it spot on you will be able to raise the column a few inches from it's lowest position. The limiting element is the clamp on the column which holds the in/out adjustment, it binds on the bottom of the dash if you raise the column too much. See also achives on adjusting the seat back to give you more arm reach.

Richard, Dave, GB, Graham, Thanks for your advice -- I now have enough room to drive in comfort. My next job will be trying to get the doors to shut completely tight. And then the minor body imperfections, and then the dripping oil, and then the upholstery, and then the loose mirrors, and . . .

BTW I am so impressed with this group that I just joined.
