MG TD TF 1500 - Steering Column - Need Help
Over the Holidays I tried to move the TD project along and decided to get the steering column painted and installed. The first problem, given that I didn't disassemble the car, was that I couldn't for the life of me figure out how the 2 shafts and 1 outer column went together. After studying every piece of documentation I could find, I determined that one of the shafts was from an MGA - no idea how it found its way into my boxes of bits, since I have a B not an A! Anyway, all is now proceeding and I have dug out all of the various clamps and spacers, with the exception of the long and short spacer for the lower clamp, which attaches to the front tower. Can anyone tell me the length of these two? Thanks, Don |

Hi Don, I'm a full fledged newbie to mg td's. I purchased TD/24953 last summer and have been reading as much as possible since then. I've been doing a complete tear down and it happens that I just removed the steering column two days ago. My car has not run since 1972 so I'm guessing that this part is likely to be original. The lower clamp spacers on my column measure about 1 7/16" and 5/16". Hope that this helps. My first post! Only took me about 6 months. P.S. I'm located in SW Oregon. Kirk |

Sorry we misssed you on this, Don. Welcome Kirk-good to have you on board. My spacers measured .300 on the short-1.450 on the long. Bout the same as Kirk reported. Dan |

Hi Dan, Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm certain I'll have many questions for the members in the future. Kirk |

Hi Tom, I'm a native of Coquille. I'm unsure of the procedure. Should we continue this by way of email since we are off topic? |

Thanks everyone - now onto the next challenge, the doors! Kirk - if you haven't yet discovered Dave Braun's excellent site you need to bookmark it immediately!! It is www.dbraun99.com/mgtd15470/ Outstanding photo documentation and a Godsend to somebody like me who acquired their TD in a disassembled state. Don |

Don, I have spent several hours at Dave's site and you are right. It's amazing! Unlike you, my TD came largely in one piece. I will have no excuses when the time comes to start putting Matilda back together. Unfortunately, my own photo documentation habits are largely lacking and so is my memory. Kirk |

James, Thanks for the link to Bob McCluskey's site. I hadn't stumbled across it yet. I will check yours next. Kirk |

I don't post too often but I'm in Eugene with my TD and five other British cars all older than 22 years. I guess Eugene is central west Oregon? John Quilter Eugene Oregon ![]() |

John, Good to hear from you. I regularly travel up and down Hwy 101 in the course of my job. I've seen at least two TD's in Florence. I've heard that there is a pretty active club there. Are you acquainted with any of the members? Also, I'm going to need engine machining done or at least checked out. My engine shows evidence of a thrown rod at some point in its history, but appears to have run again after repairs were made. Any recommendations close by? Thanks, Kirk |

Kirk, I understand there is a club in Florence and I am a member of the Oregon British Car Club based in Eugene. There is also a very good sales and repair shop for classic British and sports cars in Eugene. Contact me off line for further info. jquilter<at>peoplepc.com John Quilter |

Jim - Thanks for the link to Bob McCluskey's site. I can use every reference I can find! My project over the weekend was to go through the bucket of bolts, nuts and washers which I have run through the tumbler and polisher, to sort them by size and thread type so I can figure out what I am going to need for the assembly phase. Hopefully in the not too distant future. I have included a picture of the chassis as I purchased it on Ebay. The body tub was in pieces, as was all the remaining sheet metal. The rest was in 4 storage bins! Don ![]() |

Don, Thought I'd post this picture of Matilda taken a couple of days ago. I've been fighting quite a rusty bolt battle. No fastener yields without the application of liberal amounts of heat, penetrating oil, and the aid of my trusty cordless impact driver. All the sheet metal has been solid so far with the exception of the area in contact with the running boards and below, which has quite a few rusted through places. I was hoping to avoid having to redo the wood but, alas, it's shot under the doors and there are other weak areas as well. I guess it's to be expected from a car that has spent the last twenty years sitting in a shop less than half a mile from the salt water of Coos Bay. Matilda and I got off to a rocky start. I brought her to her new home shortly before last July 4th. In my excitement, I fell off the trailer when unloading her at my place and fractured my left shoulder. I still managed to get the XPAG out mostly by myself in the next couple of weeks but was slowed significantly as I'm left handed! Kirk ![]() |
