MG TD TF 1500 - SU rebuild

What is the best book or DVD to buy to learn how to properly rebuild the SU's.

Thanks,

Rob

It's trial and error on the process, although the Haynes SU carb book is pretty helpful. You can also find Jim Taylor's notes on the subject, they're on-line. Jim is no longer with us, but he was a careful and consistant technician.

The most difficult thing is if they require rebushing. The old bushes must be reamed out and then the new bushes installed, and everything has to be aligned, with no protrudance into the bore, and then final reamed. The new shafts will need to be drilled for the idle stops. Joe Curto has shafts and bushings. The specialized reamers too, or you can send the carburetors to someone who does it. The delivery time is about two weeks. I don't usually advise going oversized, but sometimes it is possible to do so and save the bushes.

You can contact me off line if you need some pricing.

Rob I have found that a 3/8" counterbore with a pilot long enough to reach the other side of the carb. will work just dandy. I put the counterbore in the lathe chuck and hold the carb body in my hand. Bore just till the new bushing will just be flush on the outside. That will leave a wall of the original shaft hole so when you turn it around to do the other side you have the original size hole to use as a guide to keep the counterbore lined up correctly.

I stopped rebuilding my SU's a number of years ago and now send them to Joe Curto in New York.

What's happened to the Lawrie Alexander video that Moss was selling? IMHO, it was the best thing since sliced bread. Bud

The Moss Fall/Winter MGT catalog has an Su rebuild video on page A27, product number 211-036, for $ 44.95. Don't know if that's the one you're referring to. It doesn't mention who presents it.

Dave Braun also rebuilds SU's He is doing mine right now. Not sure if he is actively advertising this service, but drop him a note and he can give you more details.
Bruce Cunha

That must be it, Bobby. It doesn't show in the Spring/Summer catalog. It's right up on the top of the DIY'ers toolkit, in my opinion. Bud

See MNMGTR website for Dave B's Carb rebuild under resources/.
