MG TD TF 1500 - Sump, anyone?

I'm selling off the early, non-finned sump that came with 'the53'. Thought I'd give you folks first shot at it. See http://www.ttalk.info/SumpForSale.htm for details. Bud

Sump looks beautiful but the drain plug has seen better days. I am looking for a sump that can be modified to have a fitting for an oil temp. gauge. So I don't need one that has been cleaned and repainted.

Bob,

Not sure what you mean by a sump that can be modified to have a fitting for an oil temp gauge. All of them can be modified, can't they?

Although it seems convenient to just drill and tap the drain plug for the fitting a better solution would be to have a bung welded onto the pan itself and have that drilled and tapped for a permanent installation of the temp gauge.

I do have a good sump, reasonably clean but not painted if you're interested.

I had my sump modified as Gene said to install my oil temp gauge. It is much easier to change the oil as compared to using the special fitting I had made to fit in place of the original plug. I was always concerned that I would somehow damage the bulb on the end of the sensor line at oil change time. The line is much like the radiator temperature sensor.
A photo is following in the next message.

Gene G. -- Yes, you are correct they can all be modified. What was going through my mind was that I wanted an additional sump so I could take my time getting the plug welded in and tapped etc. Without tying up the TD waiting for the sump to be modified. I guess it turned out to be a poor choice of words (phrase).

If you're interested in mine contact me offline...my wife wants me to get rid of some of my *stuff*.

Bob, see eBay #200374186731. There's a non-finned sump that's going for a little over $20.

I'll try to post the photo again.
The sump is painted Rustoleum Bergundy from a spray can. I have used this paint on the engine and never had a heat problem. It is more economical (cheaper)than most of the "specialty paints" and readily available in most hardware stores.

Mike Marini, I assume this thread will answer your questions.

Very pretty and clean installation, Jim.

Incidentally, Roger Furneaux (Mad Metrics) sells magneic sump plugs for the TC/TD/TF - abt. £7. I have one and its works well.

I was in Abingdon Spares inventory a few weeks ago, and they had several (used, of course) finned sumps.

No idea what they were priced at.

Jim M. -- From your beautiful picture, the oil temp. fitting is to the rear of the drain plug. Any reason that it is behind rather than forward?

I have seen a TA with a factory installed oil temp. gauge and it was forward of the drain plug. It is I know a different engine but I still wonder if there is a reason to do it one way as opposed to the other.

Sincerely,

Bob, my placement was based on keeping the sensor line out of the way and closer to the body. Just a personal preference.
Jim Merz

Jim,
I would be very interested in knowing what range of temperatures are you getting from your oil in the sump, and what oil weight are you using? Have you ever been concerned about the temperatures you have seen, and have you changed your driving habits because of the temperatures?
