MG TD TF 1500 - Tack drive gears

Went to a Braille Raylle Saturday, a friends tack drive started to make a noise. So we unlatched the bonnet to have a look. The collar that threads to the generator had about 1/8 inch play. It's a new all brass unit. I told him that mine did not have that play. So we went to look at mine. No play and tack works perfect. But the housing where the gears are located is loose and the collar holding the original style outer cable housing is loose. Dose any one know if I can peen the two rivets over more to make the cover on the gear box grease tight. Also is there a way to tighten up the feral holding the outer cable housing, where it threads to the tack drive unit. I would like to keep the gear box and the original cable housing, if possible. Thanks John

Good luck.

For Pete's sake, we take pride on this BB of being articulate, accurate and descriptive, and faithful to the language heritage of our British cars!

The device is a tachometer (tachometre to absolutely correct!)hence is abbreviated as a "tach", and not a 'tack'. The Brits have it right, and call it a rev-counter.

(Also note feral = ferrule, to get it perfectly right!)

A tack is something a cobbler puts in leather!

Thanks for your reply, Gordon, but shouldn’t this be BBS. Also you should have pointed out that I asked for “ where the collar attaches to the generator”, when in fact I should have said where the collar attaches to the dynamo. As far as the feral verses the ferrule, goes my spell checker kicked it out. And who am I to argue with it! Also you didn’t correct all the incorrect punctuation. It should also be noted that all your typing should have been in capitols. That way I would have known that you were pi**ed off. We of Canadian heritage have a old saying. “It is far better to be pi**ed off, than pi**ed on”. Finally in closing I must say I’m sorry I asked.
Thanks for your help. John

My apologies to you John, since you bear a Canadian heritage.

Had I known that, I would have thrown in a few eh's? Because I know YOU would have known what that meant.

For the record, I keep a few spare tach gearboxes on hand. I have been able to use a small bolt (2 of course) and put fibre washers on both sides and some silicone glue. It still leaks a little, but it keeps me happy.

Gord,
I don't posses a Canadien heritage (I'm Polish decent) however, My lovely wife of 45 yrs hails from HULL, PQ, and still has many relatives living in Hull and Aylmer (which we visit) when possible. So do I have to now have 'Rita' post my MGTD questions in order to get a sensible answer from you, EH. Also I spent all my summers from 1948 thru 1963 at a cottage in Belle River, Ontario. Also for your info we spent a week every summer from 1969 thru 1980 at the Clevelands House in the Muskoka Lakes Area. Also, my best man at my wedding using wedding cars tonbridge and still my best friend is Larry Tunney (my lawyer also) is from Ottawa and is realted to "Tunney's Pasture" in your Nations Capital. So I hope we can not let this BBS get bogged down in the kind of International krap that is infecting the world out side of this BBS. We are here because we love our MGTD's and sometimes need to help each other.

When the tack drive becomes loose one way to fix it is to drill out the rivets and replace with 8-32 screws. However this will make it possible to over-tighten the screws so I machine two spacers which fit between the two halves of the housing and prevent crushing or warping it. A little silicon sealer around the joint will help also.

Has anybody found an outlet for replacement gears for tach drive gearboxes? I need two sets for my worn boxes.

Sandy --- Try Abingdon Spares, Seems to me I got a repair kit from them a few years ago.
