MG TD TF 1500 - TD Clips?

The following pair of clips came with a box of TD bits that I was gifted recently. These came from a restorer who had finally sold his his beautifully restored car. Does anyone recognise them & if so can you tell me where they were originally fitted? The clip in the foreground that secures two lines could be for the brake & harness where they run close together along the chassis rail. The other I have no idea about. Cheers

I don’t know for sure but the top clip may have been to hold the wiring harness to the inside of the tub brace before it splits to go fore and aft down the frame rail. Or it may hold the harness to the top of the frame below the distributor or dynamo. Hard to tell how big it really is. I only say this as the single clips similar in design to your bottom one are too small for that section of the harness.

As for the double clip I’ve never come across one on any of my cars. Including the two MK IIs I have.

There is a double clip on the fram rail for the wiring harness just after it splits neat the oil pump.

M Grogan on the RHD cars the fuel & brake lines are on opposite chassis rails. Can you take a pic of it Jim? Cheers

The smaller bundle goes to the generator. The larger to the headlamps and running lights.

My clip is not original, Its the closest AS had available.

another pix to follow.

JA Benjamin

in this pix you can see where the clip is ans how the wires go.

Thanks Jim. That certainly looks like it AND the correct location! More pics of other bits to follow. Cheers

Are those clips still available? (sorry for the diversion).

I got it from AS, but the old AS.
Not from Catalog.
I called and asked.

Any thoughts on the other clip? I also came across three different sizes of the following clips. Their length can be gauged from the metric ruler. Were all three original? The largest appears to be for the rear axle brake lines. Where do the others go. One perhaps for the harness under the radiator? Cheers

Large clip used in 2 places. On the chassis rail near the dynamo and up the side of the firewall leading to the regulator etc.
Same as USA 1950's Ford used, I got mine on ebay from USA.

Mike do you have a pic of one in use on the firewall location? Cheers

Mike. I would like to know your source for the clips or what year make Ford I should be looking for to do a search. I have not been able to find the larger clips

Comparing the images from Jim & Mike it seems I have one of each. I'm inclined to think that the clip that Jim has identified is the correct one for the chassis rail. The other single clip may well be for the harness at the firewall as Mike suggests. No comments yet on the other 3 clips. Cheers

Yes I as said earlier the big single clip attaches to the firewall pylon and another on top of the frame rail below the dynamo. Both are used in support of the wiring harness. No venders seem to supply them.

Peter I had to go back and look at your pics. The larger single clamp is similar to the placement I mentioned but I thought mine had the same type of retainer into the chassis like that on your double clip. I’ll have took and see if I have any originals still in place on my other cars to verify this. My mind isn’t as clear as it once was. But it looks like yours could be used for that purpose

Here are those clips

Peter I just found a batch of the big end harness clips with the retention like the brake line clips. They will arrive to me after Christmas. I will evaluate them and report back to you. I can’t pull up a pic to copy it here.

I got mine off ebay from vintagefordparts item ref 8M-14197, although no longer listed.
the guy should be able to advise which Ford is relevant, but he is away until January.

Originally listed as 1949 to 1956 FORD CAR WIRING RETAINER CLIP UNDER HOOD

Peter. I Woke up this morning to have an email saying the seller cancelled my order for the clips and refunded my money but no other explanation. Have sent the seller an inquiry. Needless to say I’m not a happy camper

Well thats not good...I was hoping to find some myself for the 50 TD
L E D LaVerne

I just did a Google search for the part number Mike Lees gave and came up with a source here in the US: https://cgfordparts.com/ufolder/fordpart.php?number=8M-14197
Actually, if you search for "Ford 8M-14197" (without the quotes), any number of places seem to have them.

LaVerne and Peter. I found another source. denniscarpenter.com. Look at the 8N tractor or ford Passenger car Catalogs. $2.95 ea. I’m going to order 10. They also have another clip very similar to one of the TD specialty clips. Will report on both when they arrive. Can’t order until after Christmas.

These are the standard repro brake line clips Peter. The problem with them are twofold. First they are very expensive however the real issue is that during manufacture the 'legs' are not offset which means that they invariably break when fitting, as they are unable to slide past each other as originally intended. At over $10 AU each here, I broke three before I figured out what the problem was. I was less than thrilled.

The two clips in my original post are the items I was seeking info on. Jim has identified the location & purpose of the double clip. The other I'm still not 100% clear on. Nor has there been a response to the other 3, one of which has to be for the rear brake line at the axle. One could be for the harness under the radiator. Cheers

Peter H. I can’t agree with you more. I bought well over 70 of the brake line clips from various sources and they’re all junk. I had 53 failures and no one would stand behind them. At first I thought maybe it was the powdercoated frame that closed up the holes so I cleaned them out with the appropriate drill size. I was still breaking them and opened the holes up yet again. I then thought it was the material itself as they all break in one of two spots. At the 90° bend of either tab. 46 in one side and 7 on the other. With a stress point at the 90° bend causing stretching and thinning of the outside aspect of the bend and the tempering done the clips are quite brittle to start with. Compounded with the fact that the two tabs can not cleanly pass each other when compressed guaranties their failure.

Wow!! Bill I was really p!$$#d off when I broke three. The $ math on 53 is scary! What I love about old school British engineering is the over design. Planned obsolescence was a concept that was anathema to the chaps with the stiff upper lip.. This sort of not fit for purpose crap just wouldn't happen in the good old days of quality control. Cheers
