MG TD TF 1500 - td mrk 2 fuel pumps and coil

here is exactly what i did. I have been doin this in a car port in Maui. Not the best situation dispite the nice surroindings. I am rollin around under this car to change the rear main, complete 5 speed conversion. Great , everything is finally in order. Prolem is this. I got tired of spinnin and respinnin crank to make sure clearances and crank were workin properly. I was on passenger side and saw smoke come up on the other side., Stopped what i was doin. noticed i had not yet attached ground to trany. Now i have everything back up and ready to go, no power to fuel pumps and all the sudden coil is hour before i can even touch it, is so hot. I have run continuity tests from white fuel pump lead to coil. ok, i have check fuse blocks. Have i somehow managed to fry the coil. This is what i suspect. I tried to run test across poles of coul 4.5. seems crazy high to me. thoughts?

First of all, are you describing the coil of the pump, or the ignition coil, that got hot?

Do mean you got 4.5 Ohms resistance across the ignition coil terminals? That's not bad. Sounds like the key was on with points closed for quite a while.

Sure ignition coil still has juice? You'll have to backtrack with a meter to find out where & why the pump has no power while the coil does, since they are on the same nonfused circuit. Check for bullet connectors or fried wires.

Let us know what you find.

4.5 ohms seems high to me. I would be looking for 3.2 ohms on a non-ballasted 12v ignition coil.

It may be high but my five NOS BR12 coils, the correct coil for the TD/C cars ("for high speed engines", according to Lucas), all read 4.5 ohms on my analog meter.

found the old mechanics had put a fuse in the wrong location, dopes. Put it all back to gether this morning and it is running. Now for the carbs, gotta love em. Aloha
