MG TD TF 1500 - TD throttle spring anchor bracket

What is the correct position of the angled bracket that is attached to the starter upper bolt which holds the end of the throttle linkage return spring? Closer to the block, straight up or farther away from the block?
John Quilter

I suppose it depends on how much tension you like on the throttle; I like a medium tension so there is no jackrabbitting, and so I leave the starter bolt a bit loose, hook up the spring on the arm and the bracket, and let it find its own position.

If it feels too light I move it slightly farther away to give more tension. I often see an incorrect hardware store spring, which gives the wrong tension; I also carry a spare. Like tire pressure there is no one "right" answer.

John, do a bit of archive looking. There have been a number of threads on this. A very recent one showed an excellent view of one showing it angled right toward the linkage. Bud

I set my bracket straight up and it works fine, but the tension is a little too light for me so I'm going to rotate it down a little like Tom says and put more tension on the spring. The pedal is just a little too soft and very sensitive. PJ

When I got my '53 TD about 10 years ago, the throttle spring was attached straight down and hooked onto a stud on the bottom front of the starter. Last year I ordered the proper bracket that mounts on a starter bolt, and a new spring from Moss. However, the angle as shown in the pic below looks extreme to connect to the new bracket, and when I did the throttle was awful. Is the angle shown extreme? If so, what could the issue be? If not, what can I do to correct the tension? Any advice appreciated.

PS: The pic shows the spring in its original straight down position to the FRONT of the starter, and NOT connected to the Moss bracket as it should be.

No one have any clues?

Mr. Karpman

The attached photo is of my TF 1500 when I took it apart. I do not know if it is/was correct but I put it back exactly as shown with a new Moss spring. It works great. No complaints.

The bracket for the throttle return spring on my TF is attached to the inboard bolt for the starter exactly as in Dan's photo. What is the purpose of the threaded hole above the starter? That seems like a logical attachment point for the bracket. Is the bracket in the wrong place on Dan's car and on my car?

My guess is that the extra one is a hole-d over (sorry) from the TC starter, which is a 3-hole starter case.

Thanks for the pic Dan. It's hard to see the angle of the spring. So, based on my pic/diagram, is the angle of the spring I outlined correct?

You may want look at TF 9052, pics 164 & 165. They show pretty much what my photo shows.

Here's the link.

Your photo is very difficult to decipher. I think the spring tension will have more effect that the angle of the bracket.

Sorry, I gave you the wrong pic numbers. Look at 87 & 88.

Dilbert Dumbo (me) must fess up.

Here's what I discovered. I knew when I got the TD, the throttle spring attached to the bottom front of the starter was wrong, and the bracket was missing, but it worked fine, so I left it alone. After 9 years I decided to get the proper bracket and spring from Moss. I attached the bracket, and like a dumbo, attached the old spring to it, not remembering that I ordered a new spring. The old spring was considerably longer than the Moss spring because it had to stretch to the bottom of the starter. Therefore little tension when hooked up to the new bracket. Today, I wondered if this was the new spring from Moss, and a quick look in my spares bin showed my error. There, in all it's glory, was the new Moss spring! Considerably shorter than my old spring of course. I hooked it up to the bracket, and Bob's your uncle, I have a great throttle response. Problem solved (which I created). Oh well, I am content to remain a rank amateur, as usual.
