MG TD TF 1500 - TD Windscreen Wiper Removal?
What is the trick to removing the CW1 wiper motor from the TD windscreen? I have removed the two nuts and the fixing nut on the outside of the windshield frame. There is a brass piece at the end of the main shaft that is preventing me from removing it from the frame. What am I missing? Mark Sherman 1953 mg td ![]() |

That is the split collar, which should stay in the wiper arm. Start the threads into the arm and twist/work it off, the brass and the nut should stay in the arm. George |

George: Thanks for your response but I am not sure I understand. If the split collar stays on the shaft, what am I to "twist/work it off?" If the brass split collar stays on, is the shaft supposed to slip out of the motor? Mark |

The split collar is supposed to slide off the shaft. You can force a screwdriver tip into the split in the collar far enough to force it open a bit to get it to come loose. Cheers - Dave |

Mark, the nut w/ threads and the brass part are not suppose to come out of the wiper arm. Screw the arm back on but don’t tighten fully. Then twist and pull the arm/collar/ nut assembly off in one piece. When initially removing the wiper arm, you only need to loosen the nut a quarter turn, which releases pressure on the split taper, which frees the whole assembly up. Hope that helps, heading out to dinner. George |

Dave: Thanks. That brass split collar popped right off, allowing me to remove the shaft from the windscreen frame. (In a situation like that I am always afraid to apply too much pressure and break something. Good to know in advance how it will turn out.) (Sorry, George!) Mark mrkshrmn at hotmail.com |
