MG TD TF 1500 - TD2 vs. TD/C Mark II

Another of those pesky "Excellent example of a 1953 mg td Mark 2" on eBay right now, item #320544657185 - a TD2, NOT a Mark II. Chevy 1600 engine, auto trans, all replaced instruments, etc. etc. One would think that the TD2 vs. Mark II confusion would have been settled by now...

I directed him to the reg page so he can look up his car. Hope I was not the first that told him his car was not a MKII
Bruce Cunha (1950 TD 4139)

Bruce - I think I was, as he was very snippy with me, telling me that he had spoken with an expert in the registry, who told him it WAS a Mark II. He began rather rudely, saying "Are you interested in buying this car? If not, it's a mute point..."

I notice he has slightly changed the ad, removing some Mark II references, but not all...
t lange

Pretty strange to offer a TD MKII when it is the engine that makes it a TD MKII....not to mention that it isn't a MKII.... that TD2 screws up a lot of people... the chap i bought mine from stressed that the 2 was not a MKII (this before i knew anything about TDs)....

gblawson(gordon- TD27667)

According to the T series handbook, a Mark II has "TD/C" in the prefix of the car number.
Mike Hart (52 TD 16378)

People also get confused because only the later TD/C engines used the TD/3 designation; earlier TD/C cars had had engines marked TD/2, even though they had all the TD/C engine features like higher compression ratio, larger valves, larger 1-1/2" carbs, etc.

Just for fun I sent this:

Dear georgesbuddies,

It's not a Mk II. It's a regular TD, without an XPAG engine or gearbox. If it were a Mk II the number would be TD/C 29443. Sorry Chap, but you are misrepresenting your item.
- dave

He responded with:

dave ,repeating my statement this has a chevy motor not a mg motor or gear box. I stated this in the description .............Read it ! As a purist are you interested in purchasing this car?
- georgesbuddies

So I sent this in respons:

Dear georgesbuddies,

It's not a Mk II. Just as bad as advertising a kit car as an MG. Did you read your item description?....... Read it!
- dave

and now I'm done playing.
Dave Braun

Told you he was snippy!

LOL Tom

He must be getting p... -off. I got a snarky reply. For me, the car's value is in just the car, w/o the drive train.

I'm not sure I want to deal with a guy like that!

Just to liven things up a bit, there seems to be a GENUINE TD/C on eBay UK right now, LHD, new loom, no rust, item 180516685451. Matching numbers, and "car can be test driven on private land"! (needs a small amount of work)

But how can someone with a Mark II say, "I have got roof bars but no cover", and not know what Andrex shocks are?

$11,000 so far, but in Britain. Can't see the ID plate.

For grins, sent the clown a brief inquiry about the andrex shocks. Just asked if he had them and the MK2 accessories. He must be getting really tired of our inquiries, by his rather snotty response as to whether or not I was going to bid on this 'lovely' car, "or what".

a "moped chopper" ?

Another day ...more salt ...no responce yet!

(Beg to differ but that is NOT a Mark II ...it is a TD2. Quite a differance in production numbers between those models. You really should correct your listing. Then again "promoting" this as a MK II is kind of silly anyway in that the main componet (the engine) is not there.)
David Sheward

Oh well.....
" Are you interested in this car ? If not you should mind your business not mine."

David Sheward

I have been reading this thread with intrest. THe car is not a Mark II, what is the guys problem? To bad E bay does not have some kind of honesty thing for the ads.
Most of us on this board know the diff between the cars and this one especially with that motor would not buy it but there are folks out there who are not into them the way most of us are and they could be bitten. To bad..
Tom Maine (TD8105)

Caveat emptor.
Geoff Love 1952 TD

Seems he finally caved in and indicated it is not a MK2
Paul Gaynor

Good for him! Didn't make it very prominent though, did he?
Rob Edwards

I sent him a note explaining that he had a plain TD, a real mark II would have a number that began with TDC, bump out on the hood, etc, etc. This was his response to me:
you are an idiot waste your time with someone who cares what you write.GET a life!!!!!!!!!!!

what a jerk. Buyer beware
D. Sander

Don't think fee-bay will allow you to "change" listing after you have a bid. (makes sence as scammers would have a field day if they did!...put a bid in on a jag and it would turn into a VW last day of the auction!)

If he is shooting for the amount on that appraisal as a reserve ....well lot's of luck with that one!
He did fire me a note saying "thanks the mistake has been correctedand added to the listing".
Must of got sick of hearing it.
IMHO ...bid is sitting higher than what I would ever pay right now.
David Sheward

I just took another look at the ad and it still says Mark 2 TD.. what is the guys problem, I wonder?
Tom Maine (TD8105)

I suspect his problem is that the car is not what he has always told everyone it is; it's therefore not worth what he thought; and it's not getting the kind of bids he wants because it is a bastard. And getting comments left, right and center about his lack of knowledge about HIS car stings but he doesn't want to admit that to anyone, and is too stubborn to change the listing in an honest way. He still says it is one of 1710 Mark II's...

So despite what he told his wife, the cr will not sell beyond his reserve (the car is at $6,000 right now), and he will not be able to sell the car until he finds a sucker who doesn't know anything about MGs but thnks it's fun-looking, and a rare variant, at that.

As the person who started this thread, them's my 2 cents.

Tom,
You're pretty close. I sent him a short message explaining why the people of this BBS are so interested. He replied as follows:

Dear rsthomas177,

Thanks for your thoughtful post.Unfortunatly I listened to a person who told me it was a mark 2,my mistake for listening to him. The funny thing this is a great little car much better than my other 1250cc MGTd i owned 15 years ago. I have owned many classics & motorcycles ,this was bought because of a leg problem I have now.I just sold a TVR & a 911 both owned for years because of my leg. This 53 Mg works and is appraised by an insurance appraiser for $20,000 . Thats cheap concidering the $$$$ put into this car. Again thanks for your email . Ivan

Warm regards,
Dick Thomas

Dick Thomas

Good email... if he can still change anything about the ad, it will probably happen....
gblawson(gordon- TD27667)

Think I would take the $7k....run like hell...and hope to not be hearing from a "gray man in a thin suit"!
David Sheward

By contrast, the real TD/C for sale on eBay UK (needing an interior and top, etc.) is up to $15,000, with almost 6 hours to go. Seems unlikely a US buyer could add shipping on top of the purchase price and still come out OK.

Tom
t lange

His response to Dick was a lot nicer than the

"you are an idiot waste your time with someone who cares what you write.GET a life!!!!!!!!!!!"
response I received from him. Fortunately, the reserve price was not met, so nobody was taken advantage of. Hopefully, it was a learning experience for him and it will not be relisted as a mark 2 in a few months.
D. Sander

D. Sander,
D.,
I certainly agree that I received a nicer response. It proves my long held theory that people from Ohio are simply better received than people from Vermont. Think it has something to do with the water.
