MG TD TF 1500 - TD29127 for Auction - Sydney

Shannons Auctions in Australia have a very nice looking TD coming up for auction on 10 October from their Sydney address. The mechanical report is the best I've seen so the winning bidder will get a car ready to show or drive. Lot #23 it is described as TD29127 with eng number 29584 (assume that is XPAG)View at www.shannons.com.au/auctions/lot/?id=RY2QS46052B2BSEQ

The blurp includes the cars history. Sorry chaps but the steering wheel lives on the right.

Nice looking TD. Only thing I see is the Chrome headlights. Not sure about Australian TD's, but I thought the chrome headlights were only on the early TD's

Kev,
I am suprised that they do not show more pictures of the car,, doesn't mention any weather equipment like toneau or side screens,,, One thing it does mention in the inspection report is that the ABS Warning Light is good!!!!! That's reasuring,,,,

I was always told that TDs started with painted shells, switched to chrome, then back to painted....and the MKII's all came with chrome headlights and grill slats...?

The NEMGTR Restoration Handbook, page 45, goes along with the uncertainty bit "...Other experts are equally certain that early cars had plated lamps, middle ones were painted, and late ones went back to chrome again, but they fuzzy about the definition of early, middle and late..." Bud

My TD3983 has chrome headlights, dented up as they are, and the Lucas medallion. I can see someone hitting the headlights a couple times with the bonnet but mine looks like they were hit a lot and hard.

My TD8105 had original chromed headlamps on it. I have purchased repos from england and gave my originals to another club member to try and save. They were pretty beat up when I got the car.
Tom Maine (TD8105)

My TD #3376 had chrome but they were so dented and corroded that I replaced them with repos from England as well.

The steering wheel is where it should be!

Tom and Brian, did you get the repos from Moss. I was going to have the originals straightened and rechromed but it may be a lot cheaper to buy repos instead and repair the originals in the future.

Thanks,
Rich

My head lights were painted.
Car # GA/12789 EX/NA
Since my engine has been replaced and the numbers do not match and I wanted chrome I had them chromed.

It cost $300, but a magnificant job.

I dont have a link but its on my HD. I have been using it as a reswtoration guide.)

I get:

"Headlamp bodies, headlamp adjusting nuts, headlamp rings, headlamp ring retaining screw, King of the Road medallion Chrome Note that on later TD's (late 51, 52 and 53) the headlamp bodies were painted the body color."

My care dates from early January 1952 but wal always registered as a 1951.

I'm not saying this headlight question is one of them, but there are many errors in this web-page. Errors have been pointed out, some repeatedly, but no attempt to correct them has been made.

My TD29271 (original engine 29645) has chrome headlights and had chrome grill slats when I purchased it in 1974.

I believe both were original.

Chrome has been removed from the grill slats, as it was pealing off.

Can not remember if the headlight support brackets were chromed or not.

As the auction car is 56 prior to mine and the engine 61, I would assume the engine is original.

cheers

Richard, I got mine from England. Lew Palmer got them for me from someplace he knew of. Jim, I know the site says that the buckets were painted but I have read in other places that the factory had stuff laying around and just used them whenever. I bought my car from the second owner and the chrome headlamps were according to him from the prior owner, original to the car and they looked it. We have another original in our club that also has chrome headlamps.
Tom Maine (TD8105)

I think this may be one of those issues that not having factory records on may not be easy to solve. Very possible that cars shipped to Australia were done up differently.

For those down under. Do you see TD's with painted headlights?

Same for Chrome grills. I was always lead to believe that only the MKII had chrome grill slats in the US.

My '50 TD #3966 has chromed headlamps, the brackets were painted. All ex works.
Since the rebuild the brackets are also chrome.

An update on last night's auction folks. TD29127 sold for $30,000 - that's Aussie dollars, don't know the current conversion but I imagine the vendor is happy!

I'll bet it "went over the top" because it was noted in the inspection report that the ABS Warning Light is good!!!!!
