MG TD TF 1500 - TD axel shaft procurment
Think I broke axel shaaft yesterday. Where is best place to find one with BETTER tempered steel? I'm leary of what we get now. This one was original on 52 TD and I don't want to have to repeat soon. |

Try this link ( no affilitation to me ) http://cgi.ebay.com/HEAVY-DUTY-HIGHLY-UPGRADED-MG-TD-TF-YB-REAR-AXLE-SHAFT_W0QQitemZ350172596414QQihZ022QQcategoryZ4150QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem I have had them three years now and no problems I am aware of. Lots of jack rabbit starts while racing for pink slips :~) I have even been known to pop the clutch in first while reversing ( well it was a " slow" pop ! ) still no problems. Cheers, Keith |

Ellis - Contact Jerry Austin in California at jdaustinmg@dslextreme.com He has had new axles made that are quite robust. Cheers - Dave |

Ellis, I believe Jerry Austin is 'nordenguy' on ebay (re Keith's post). His axles are excellent. I have a pair in my car. warmly, dave |

Dave B - "I believe Jerry Austin is 'nordenguy' on ebay" You are right, I had forgotten about his e-bay name. Cheers - Dave |

Hey Ellis: Were you able to remove the end that was stuck in the diff? Jeff |
J. W. Delk |
No Jeff I will have to remove that half and get to it and punch it out. Bob Wagner and others said no other way Gpt a magnet but one is not strong enough to pull it after all that sticking in there. Your Day I think is coming over tomorrow along with Charlie and view the work Thanks Ellis |

Ellis, I have attached a picture broken axle removal tool that I made. I'ts been used sucessfully a few times,, made out of 3/16 steel rod available from a hardware store,,,, It goes in througn the "Good" side of the rear end,, the cuvre at the end is to allow it to be gently pursuaded aroung the diff gears to the stuck piece of the broken shaft.,,, First view,, ![]() |

One more comment,,, Befor you put the car on jack stands, make sure there is nothing in the way (like a garage wall) on BOTH sides of the car for the axle shafts!! SPW |

Ellis. I had the same thing happen to my TF when arriving at a GOF in Athens. I had to split the diferential in the parking lot at the motel. Moss sent me a new axle overnight but the nut was a different thread. I went to a farm implement store and they had a nut to fit but it was not a castellated one. They cut notches in it with and angle grinder. Then they pressed to old hub off and installed the new axle. I was back on the road by 11 am Saturday. Sandy Sanders |

Steve Did a lot of pressure have to be used? Was the rod a strong, tempered steel? Sounds god if I can do it Sandy Did you have to replace bearings and oil seals and paper gasket on the spliting? Ellis |

ELLIS, Nothing special about the rod,,, just the typical 3/16 rod 3 or 4 ft long that you find at a local hardware store.. To get to broken piece out of the splines, you must use a hammer on the rod ,,, the "spooned" end will find it's way around the back of the gears to the other side.. Rob and Tony of the North Carolina Tarheel Chapter of the "T" register have made a real neat axle tool that is made up of 3 or 4 short pieces that thread together ,,,I think in the "collapsed" state, it can fit in the glove box...Their design allows the "spooned" end to be 3/16 dia, and the other pieces can be a larger dia to take a more persuasive hit with the hammer... As far as having a spare axle shaft on board, you MUST make sure that you have a nut that fits it!!! As Sandy found out, thy are not all the same... |

Some of the comments suggest that the rear axle shafts that are currenlty available from Moss aren't the best. I just replaced both with the Moss parts - what's the basis of the concern? Thx |
Phil Atrill |
Phil, The basis for concern is that some have broken in the past,,, not all but some,,, some have been driven carefully and snapped,,, some have been raced for years with out incident.. I saw two axles on the same car snap on the Skyline Suorie (sp) ... and they were replaced just before the trip !!! I've seen many axles replaced at GOF's,,, The axles that are sold by Jerry seem to be much better,, SPW |

Phil, You have good reason to ask. Below is an exchange of e-mail correspondence I had with both Jerry Austin (aka 'Nordenguy') and Abingdon Spares, regarding the design and material specifications of new, replacement half-shafts for the TD and TF. Draw your own conclusions. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- E-Bay item 6595299276 -Seller -‘Nordenguy’ - Jan 8, 2006 Here’s some very good news for mg td and TF owners. I have commissioned a very few brand new axle shafts to be made from high-duty material, with other improvements incorporated, too. The result is certainly a much more reliable axle shaft than the original one. Here are the material and hardness specifications: Old Material: 1340 -- New material: 1541. Heat treating is by high-temperature induction. The shaft was originally surface-hardened to #50 ~ #55, whereas it is now done to #62 (which penetrates further--to about 1/3 of the diameter). Also, the shaft itself, where it used to be 15/16” in diameter from the splines at the end that fits into the differential, is reduced to 7/8” from there to where it tapers upward to the bearing stop flange. This makes that area a good deal more resistant to snapping, in which the initial torque is absorbed by actually twisting the shaft, rather than imparting a kinetic stress which could break at the point the spline enters the differential gears. (note: re-worded by me - GAC) Because breaking an axle has been an on-going problem for over 50 years, I decided to see what I could do to try to help T owners by getting this extra-duty shaft made by a company that has produced axles for many, many decades. The cost has been pretty high, but I can still pass along some substantial savings and open the auction with a starting bid WELL BELOW any company that sells them among their commercial wares (I’ve seen $185.32 and $169.95 per each), and with NO RESERVE. I don’t think any of you who travel a lot in your TD or TF should be without a spare axle shaft aboard when you travel anywhere (if fits neatly into the side curtain compartment). And here’s an opportunity to lessen the chance you will get another factory-type shaft–when you really need one–and at a price well below the stock axles offered. Jerry -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Abingdon Spares on the same subject - Mar 21 to 31, 2005 Good Afternoon, Mr. Clark: I have finally been able to speak to our supplier of axle half-shafts. The English term is EN 24 which is the same as our SAE 43/40. This, I believe he said, is a chrome/alloy material which some prefer mainly for racing, but not necessarily required. Originally, these axle half-shafts were made of a carbon material. Our's are made of an SAE 15/41H or EN 12 which is plenty strong for these cars. If we can be of any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact our office again. Abingdon Spares LLC. --------------------------------- Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. |
