MG TD TF 1500 - TDC on ebay

Not my car and I'm not in the market for another restoration, but a C popped up in TX with a buy it now of $7,800.00 OBO. It's a mess, but a good start.

That is a good start for a restoration at a very nice price for a Mark II. It has a replaced engine, so it isn't a numbers matching car. It has the Andrexes on the front.
Somewhere along the line it lost one of its fuel pumps, and hard to tell if it's sporting HS4s or HS2s.
All it needs is a lot of attention and money.

Interesting that there are no brakes on the right front wheel. Looks to be a mostly complete car. If the wood is good, it could be a fun relatively easy restoration. (Paint, chrome, interior, mechanical, top, engine overhaul, etc...)

You call it a "TDC" above and they call it a "1952 MG Other MGTD". I've never heard of either? Mine is just a plain "MG TD". Curious...

TD/C, TD MK ll, TD mark two, Competition TD. 1,710 Such TDs were made. The frame and the builders plates are stamped with the chassis number which had the prefix TD/C. The head was planed to increase the compression ratio, the valves were larger, they had 1 1/2" carbs vs. the standard 1 1/4". They had an additional Andrex friction damper at each wheel, a small blister on the hood to clear the larger front carb and a second fuel pump. The MG logo was black and white vs. cream and bronze. Later MK ll cars had badges on the he hood and rear bumper to signify that the car was a MK ll.

There is something not right about this car.

TD16169 is a standard TD, according to the on-line production records, NOT a TD/C car (I'm away from my records right now). Either this is TD16169 with a replaced engine and added Andrex shocks, bonnet, etc. (seems unlikely), or a TD/C with an incorrect Guarantee plate, and a replacement engine. The Guarantee plate has replacement screws, so it may be hinky.

I see that it has small carbs and later oil pump, so the engine is probably a replacement. I'll be able to do more digging when I am home from work, with my Mark II files.

The vin is listed in the text as 16517.
MAndrus

16517 is also listed as a regular production TD in the production records.
David

I think MAndrus mis-read the ad: the VIN is indeed listed there as 16169; 16517 is listed as the original engine number. A lot of numbers, and it sometimes gets confusing. Why people even list the body number or body type is beyond me; neither really tells us anything or use.

Have a look, 1:52 EST. He's showing the VIN as 16517, no mention of the engine number other than the photo showing 13554.

Was the VIN shown as being 16169 earlier?

....

MAndrus

The VIn in the text where he gives all the numbers identifies the engine and the chassis numbers correctly; cars registered in California were often assigned the engine number as the VIN, as he does in the specifications.

Add chromed radiator slats for the MK 11 to Dave's list above. Cheers

Chromed grill slats from TD/C/22613 onward

Thanks David. I was not aware of that & had always believed all TDC's had chromed slats. Cheers

The whole trim package probably began then - chrome slats, MARK II enamel emblems on the bonnet and on a plinth on the rear bumper, larger spare tire emblem in b/w, edtc.

I don't see where the seller is calling this a MK II or a TD/C. Think someone just added the Andrexes and the hood badge.

Looks like a factory replacement engine. I note that there are no engine numbers visible above the engine tag.

Bruce Cunha

That may well be, Bruce, but it's not an easy thing to add Andrex shocks - the special upper brackets must be welded properly to the chassis, and the lower A-arm either replaced or modified by cutting a block of steel, fitting and drilling it for the Andrex flanges. It's rare to find a non-TD/C car with Andrex shocks added, although they are listed in the parts manual as being available.

Likewise, it isn't easy to install a bonnet bulge on the right side, or to find a Mark II bonnet that would fit. I suspect it is a genuine Mark II with a replacement engine, and with a Guarantee plate from another car. I'm continuing to look into it.

I asked the seller for a better shot of the data plate. The philips screws show that it's been tinkered with.

In NC, the state inspector that came to my house knows his stuff and knows flat heads are OEM and would flag this car for further investigation.
MAndrus

Can you ask for a shot of the chassis number on the front dumb iron? This number would answer all of our questions.

David - When I reach someone I will!

MAndrus - I am pretty sure round head brass machine screws with square nuts were original, not flat-heads.

Your the expert on these Tom.
Bruce Cunha

Tom, right. I meant slotted screws (as in flat screwdriver). Poorly typed.

It's sold, BTW.

...
MAndrus

Well, the car sold to an offer less than the $7800 asking price, and more than $7,000. The seller confirmed that the chassis stamping is TD16169, a standard TD. Someone has clearly had access to a Mark II car, and has put on Andrex shocks and the Mark II bonnet. Seems a bit high for a replaced engine, non-runner, stock TD, but prices may be edging upwards. Based on the last question asked, it might go back to the UK.

PS - all Mark II questions cheerfully answered.
t lange

Wow. I am a bit surprised it looked like a TD/c and it turned out not to be. Upon further inspection it is clear that this car is a rolling parts car. All the clues were there, no brakes (no lines to either front wheel) early brake lights, late instruments (minus the amp meter) early windscreen, wrong engine, wrong seats.
The thing that threw me was the Andrex shocks on the front, and what looked to be the second fuel pump bracket removed.
Given all this, I think the selling price was a bit high. After a $40,000 restoration (wood, body, instruments, engine, chassis, interior, top, chrome, etc.) it will be a non numbers matching car worth $18-$23,000. (IMHO)
David.
D. Sander

I agree, David. I've got a couple of great genuine Mark II projects, complete with all the Mark II parts for that price!
