MG TD TF 1500 - TF Carpet

Hi Folks:
I now have my TF’s new red Karvel carpet, from Heritage Upholstery. Their Karvel material is absolutely awesome. The corn row texture is perfect and the jute back and pile is as close to original as one could want. I know that black was the original colour but their red is just perfect with my new Moss (supplied through Little British Car Co.) leather seats and interior.

I was so excited when I got the carpet that I phoned a friend and told him that it even left little red fibers stuck to my t-shirt just as they did when new. He said: “Only somebody who is sick would cuddle the new carpet for their car” and hung up on me.

Can anyone help me out with how carpets were originally fastened to a TF? What type of fasteners went were? What about underlay? Where was it used and what did it look like? Was it the tar backed straw looking stuff? Does anybody have any pictures taken of the underside of original carpet? All help appreciated.

No Underlay! Lift the Dot fasteners were used, you should have gotten a bag full with your carpet (I did). For mine from Heritage, the carpets under the seats were too wide, and there was no cover for the passenger foot rest.

There were two fasteners at the rear of each ftont carpet, Several on the firewall with stud mounts, Whever you find about 1/8 inch holes in the fire wall and foot plate were mounted 2BA (10/32) stud lift-the-dot posts for the carpet. One was a double height post that the left and right carpets both used

One stud was 2 inches directly below the steering column, another 2 inches to the right and 1 inch above the column, another above the right sitd of the tunnel in the foot plate (both carpets hook on this one).
Also two in the floor just in front of the footrest. (in the wood floor)
Thr rear carpets are held in place by he seat tracks.

Don,

Sorry to take exception, but there is underlay - a thin layer of brown jute. If I were doing it again, I'd look for some of that aluminized carpet underlay, to reflect some of the heat away from the compartment. However, I'll bet some aluminium foil would also help.

Hi John - aside from the above there's a lot of good detailed advice in the Archives - try Floorboards and Carpets. Also quite a lot of useful rebuild pics. mainly on TDs showing floorboards, LTD's and carpets which apply to TFs as well. To my memory no underlay under seats but over gearbox cover and front floorboards. Enjoy your new trim !

Cheers John.

"that aluminized carpet underlay" ...
Carpet kit I purchased had backing but I still used the above on my TF and it made a big difference in the enjoyment of driving the car. Cooler in summer, warmer in cool weather...I also did the door and tub panels and it made the whole car quieter.
My inspiration was the Chevy's & Pontiac's of the 70's ..may of those were the same cars coming off of same GM production lines. The only difference being the interior trim levels and amount of and/or lack of sound deadening materials used in them!
Without the "resonance" of the body panels you hear more of the engine...I sound I quite like!
