MG TD TF 1500 - TF Restoration Information

A friend of mine has a TF that he purchased a few years ago in boxes. He is just beginning the process of putting it together. The first thing I am going to have him do is join this forum.
He is a long-standing member and a past president of our local LBC club, and is familiar with our cars in general.
I am heading over to his house today but if I remember correctly he has the rolling chassis complete and is about to start putting the tub on the chassis.
I have a copy of Horst Schachs' "the complete MG TD Restoration Manual".

Is there an equivalent for the TF?

Are there other literature sources that would be helpful in this re-build?

Thanks,
Mort

I found Horst Schach’s guide to be really useful when rebuilding my TF. In addition I referred to Chris Couper’s Original MG TF website to be invaluable, especially the Gallery where there are great photos of almost everything. A copy of the WSM is also essential.

Agree with Dave, especially about CC's site. Also add Malcolm Green's book. Horst's section on upholstery however results in an over padded look which should be avoided. FTFU also has some great technical tips. Make inquiries here & elsewhere before purchasing parts as to their suitability. Far too many items aren't fit for purpose. My list of 55 dud parts from a major supplier continues to grow. Cheers

The chassis/running gear is pretty much the same as a TD. Seats, upholstery, dash, bonnet, etc. totally different. I think most of those areas have been covered in detail on the board over the years, so suggest a complete search there. I think there are some things not exactly correct in one of the books, so be careful as far as small details. As usual with any parts, it depends on what any supplier has at the moment, as most all are made in very small batches. Parts also depend on do you want function or originality? While a couple new SU pumps I have seen are factory original (one of the only things that is truly made by the original supplier), the inlets are steel instead of brass, etc. Do search out and use the correct profile and recently correctly reproduced after many years bonnet to cowl rubber. It will make the bonnet fit much easier. George

Cowl rubber comparison, use the rubber with the flat part that lays on the scuttle, the one with the "birds beak" never lays down as the original. The Moss one is thicker and has the wrong profile. I got mine from B&G and it matches the original perfectly. PJ

I am at the tail end of a lengthy rolling restoration of my TF. I agree with all the above.
With regards to re-upholstery, the information in Scrach's guide was not very good for the TF. The rear tub area is very very different from the TC and TD. I used Malcolm Green's book more. He devotes several paragraphs here and there to the TF.
In regard to upholstery, the "Original MG TF Guide" on line was indispensable.

Hi Tom N.,

Thankyou for your reference to the article on 'TF Interior Retrimming'
located on The Original TF midget site. I am going need to use my own notes I made on the subject some time ago when tackling the TF1500 interior work in the near future !!

By far the most useful source of information for a TD/TF rebuild is the Brown and Gammons web site. They have lots of exploded diagrams that show what all the bits and pieces you have forgotten about actually are and where they fit. I have bought many parts from them just because of their web site.

Mike,

Google search "the original mg tf midget" and CC's site will be on the top of the searches.

Once there click the details tab and the TF upholstery will be there.

I don't know why this site doesn't' like links. Sometimes they work, sometimes like in this case it does not.
