MG TD TF 1500 - TF won't start

Hi all:

Can't get the car to fire up. I think I know why...but wanted to ask the forum before trying and potentially frying the wiring. I removed all the instruments and sent them out to be refurbished. I noted the heavy gauge wires that go to the ammeter. I isolated those individually. I'm surmising I should have connected those together to allow current to flow? Can't think of any other reason why the car won't start (no fuel pump, no lights either). The starter works. Also, I don't have the instructions anymore for the loom to identify what wire goes to what connection. Under the dash portion of the loom, there is a smaller blue/white wire. Not sure what that connects to. Does anyone know?

Yes, the two wires to the ammeter would have to be connected to get power to anything other than the starter and I think horns. If you are going to fire it up I hope you have plugged the line to the oil pressure gauge somehow,

Yep,same as John and when you refit the gauges if the ammeter swings the wrong way just swap the wires over.

The Blue/white wire is usually high beam ,so 'maybe' the feed to the high beam indicator light in the instruments-?

John/William:

I had previously capped the oil line at the firewall fitting, as well as plugging the now hole in the thermostat housing for the water temp gauge bulb. Both are leak free. The loose wire was indeed for the high beam indicator. I must have knocked it loose from the connector when removing the instruments. I'll connect the Ammeter wires tomorrow and fire her up.

Thanks!
